Why Some Athletes get Away With “Murder” Some of today’s greatest athletes get away with much more than the regular public and others in their respective sport merely because of what they have accomplished. In the recent decades there are hundreds of story in this light that seem to transpire and disappear simply because of what a particular athlete has done and the accolades they receive. In recent news, Oscar Pistorious was South African sprinter that will serve less than a year of his five year sentence after shooting and killing his girlfriend. Awareness, choice, and responsibility are cornerstones of practice. That being said in many of the interviews with Jon Jones, it is apparent that he thinks in differently than most fighters. Some of the techniques derived from using Gestalt may have a better effect rather than using Existential therapy in the sense that Jones has no remorse for his actions and therefore is not responsible for his actions. The initial goal is for clients to expand their awareness of what they are feeling in the present moment. Through this awareness, change automatically occurs. The approach is phenomenological because it focuses on the client's perceptions of reality and existential because it is based in the notion that people are always in the process of becoming, remaking, and rediscovering themselves (Corey, 2017). Jones is a human being that is always changing how he views the world and his art as a martial artist in the UFC. It would be interesting to sit down with Jones and use empty chair technique and see why he does the things he does knowing that he can use his fame a fortune for the betterment of today’s youth.
