The purpose of college is to provide students with a positive learning environment. Although many colleges have a rule, perhaps colleges should ban the use of cell phones in college classrooms for three reasons. Keeping cell phones in college classrooms allows students to use it for non-educational purposes. Cell phones are also easily lost, stolen or broken and may end up in the wrong hands of an irresponsible student or could be a classroom distraction. The prevalence of cell phone use in the classroom has become a distraction to other students and faculty, and is considered impolite, and should be prohibited from use in college classrooms. This means that, when students are supposed to be learning, they could be getting in trouble. In the classroom, the primary task is learning. Being distracted by text messages or web surfing decreases learning. Secondly, these valuable items could be lost on campus. For example, a cell phone could fall out a backpack, purse or pocket, which may result in the item being lost or broken. Other students might also be tempted to take the phone. For many students, the cell phone is their most valuable possessions that hold the students entire life, from family photos to school emails to the balances of bank accounts. Cell phones can be stolen, wiped, and resold for hundreds of dollars in the space of an hour and cell phones are worth 13 times more, per ounce, than a block of silver. College takes an incredible amount of commitment in order to be successful. Cell phones only serve as distractions for students and teachers. When a phone rings in the classroom, it automatically changes the focus from the lecture to the individual's ringing cell phone. The focus of the school day should be learning, not answering phone calls or texting in class. If a cell phone rings, buzzes or lights up during instruction, the teacher would obviously have to reprimand the student which will further distract the entire
