Why School Day Should Be Shorter

Have you ever skipped school because you were stressed about a school assignment? Have you ever stayed up until the middle of the night to complete this assignment? We all know that there is approximately seven hours in a school day; however, this does not include the time spent on after-school activities. Most of us engage in clubs and sports. Most of us have jobs and participate in community service. Most of us stay after school hours to get the help we need with our school work. After all the time spent on school and extracurricular activities, there is not enough time to finish homework and study for big tests. Thus, we rush through the homework, we learn the information insufficiently, and we get no value from it. If we shorten the school …show more content…

In order to meet these requirements, the school year would have to be year round. I want you to keep in mind that this is not a bad situation. As students, many of us have summer assignments and even homework over the holidays. It would not be a significant impact on how the system already works. I believe that students as well as teachers would still benefit from this. Additionally, it would allow students to focus in class and still receive the best education they deserve. Meanwhile, Bonnie Wood in “Reasons Why the School Day Should Be Shorter” states, “teachers are often under- appreciated, under-paid, and over-extended” (Wood). If the hours were cut back, teachers would have the extra time to grade assignments and focus on educating their students. Teachers would have the opportunity to take on other activities such as church or community involvement. In addition, if teachers need to supplement their income, the shorter school days could allow them to take on mentoring or a part-time job for extra income.
