Year Round Education is becoming more popular in the United States. Many people propose changing the system from operating on a ten-month calendar to a “year round education.” In this system, schools continue with the one hundred and eighty days per year, but the days are stretched out and the students are given shorter breaks in between. The most common form of year round education is the forty-five to fifteen plan. This plan is where the students attend school for forty-five days and for three weeks, or fifteen days, they take a break from school. There are two other, less popular plans, which are the sixty to twenty and ninety to thirty. There have been many arguments concerning whether students are in school for too few days. A report in 1994 described schools as “Prisoners of Time.” The report advocates schools to break away from tradition. Recently, in 2014, a study by Congressional Research Service surveyed the research of year-round schooling. While there can be some pros to Year-Round schooling, many people argue against the idea because this school structure has several cons. A few examples of the cons are: time taken away from students to experience anything outside of school, high school students won’t be able to work summer jobs, and extracurricular activities suffer. Even though students receive a week away from the classroom, they would still have worries about remembering what they learned the previous week. This would take away their time to focus on still being young and having fun, while a one to two-month break allows them to lay back and have little worries in the meantime. Next, during summer break, students use that time to earn money and work, but since the year round schooling doesn’t provide them with a long enough period in the summer, this makes it harder for the employed students.
