It is a core American belief that everyone should be able to achieve success regardless of their background. Yet, within the past decade, that has been unattainable for those without a higher education due to the diversity of skills in the workforce. Competition from global workers and the recent technological advances have changed the skills that employers seek and desire. Degrees from college institutions are necessary to demonstrate those skills and create pathways to attaining a sustainable income to support a person’s outcomes to become successful. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2017, adults with just a high school degree were nearly twice as likely to unemployed as those with a bachelor’s degree (United States). To many employers, a degree represents that a graduate has obtained the necessary and specific skills that make them qualified for the respective job. In addition, according to Census Bureau, the average earnings of college graduates are higher, with lifetime earnings for those with bachelor degrees increasing by over $900,000 (US Census Bureau). Over the past decade, it has become a sad truth that students put themselves in debt for countless years to obtain a college degree. They attend school for long hours and run through mental hoops in stressful conditions present in skilled careers.
