Many schools across America require students in the twelfth grade to perform a certain amount of community service hours to graduate. Community service can be beneficial to the community and to students. However, if community service is required to graduate, it will be detrimental to students and as such, community service hours should not be required for seniors to graduate. Some people believe that community service is beneficial, it will be harmful to students and their time. As a senior in high school, I can testify that the majority of my time is spent with homework, college applications, and responsibilities at home. As it stands right now, I barely have any free time to myself. With this in mind, I am not the only student who has pre existing responsibilities that takes up almost all of my day. Almost every student within the senior` class spend the majority of their time like I do; homework, college applications, chores, then sleep. From this, requiring, or rather forcing, students to complete service hours violates the Constitution and breaks the law. The Constitution states "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." Lastly, graduation is a big part of anyone’s life, and disallowing it can be devastating, especially for a very small problem. If a student works countless hours getting straight A’s every year, they should not be denied graduation because they didn’t work service hours at their local laundromat. This school should not require 100 hours of community service as a graduation requirement because of the busy lives of teenagers, the pressure of graduation, and loss of enthusiasm for community service. Schools should encourage community service but this is not the way to do it.
Imagine a typical teen, they have a job, homework, sports, and other extracurriculars. They don’t get home till late at night and they are exhausted. This teen can take much more and thankfully they are about to graduate, but wait the school wants them to fit in one hundred of community service into that schedule in order to graduate. How on earth is this busey teen suppose to do that with all that they have going on? Students should not have to do one hundred hours of community service to graduate high school.
Throughout the school year I can do community service within my area by using the skills of Community, Leadership, Positive Self-Concept and Navigate the System. Next I can develop some goals to know what I want to achieve in by including the skills of Long Range Goals and Realistic Self-Appraisal. Then I can volunteer at the Food Bank and my skills of focus will be Community, Nontraditional Knowledge and Strong Support Person. First of all, I want to do community service within my area by utilizing the skills of Community, Leadership, Positive Self-Concept and Navigate the System. Imagine a young man who has nearly graduated from high school. His life should be full of hope and promise of a bright future, but he has no idea in which direction he desires to head. Picture a single mom who recently went through a divorce, she didn’t imagine she ever needed to worry for her financial future again. What about the students who excel in their studies of choice, but struggle with the subjects foreign to them? Community college can assist in overcoming those obstacles. The benefits of attending a community college include easier transitions, helping recent high school graduates transition to a 4-year college, and smaller class sizes.
At the start of the semester each year, students of all ages are asked the same questions. What kinds of classes are you enrolled in? I am in five AP classes. And? I am also playing varsity volleyball. And? I go to music lessons every Wednesday and Saturday for violin. Well, how about community service? The Importance of Community College In the article “Two Years Are Better Than Four,” Liz Addison claims that community colleges give students the opportunity to begin with the belief that anything is achievable by merely following all the steps provided. Community college tuition fees are very affordable for students compared to four years college where students have to get huge amount of loans to pay for tuition. Addison also stated how important community college is to students that didn’t finish high school. Community colleges allow students to start or continue their education.
Community service is a common service for people to take care of each other and volunteer. People apply to different community services: soup kitchen, taking care of children and homeless people, clinics, churches, schools, neighbor's house and many countless places to volunteer. Some people really enjoy to work at community services while others do not. These community services can be a punishment for criminals because a court assigns them to do so. However, some people do not agree with community service supporters. While some people believe that there should be a community service requirement for high school and college graduation because students need to learn and have experiences there, they are right; on the other hand, a community service requirement should be allowed for two reasons and not be allowed for another three reasons.
More than two decades ago, President Nixon ended the military draft. Now a new and more menacing form of enlistment is threatening our school systems. This enlistment I am speaking of is that we are forcing "community service" to be a requirement for high school graduation.
Community Service is a service that is performed for the benefit of the public or its institutions. There are two groups who perform community service, and those are criminals and the rest of us. This means that, for the majority of us, performing community service is completely voluntary. It is for this reasons li that I believe that community service should not be mandatory in high school for graduation. People of all age groups, with a maximum number of youth are involved in the process of community service. In an article written by Linda Saslow titled High School Mandating Community Service for Graduation, she mentions the many pros to mandatory community service. Saslow mentions school districts like Roslyn and Hewlett-Woodmere (1994, para 3) that have started requiring high school students to complete a certain number of community service hours in order to graduate high school. Their goal is to give “kids the opportunity for new experiences” (Saslow, 1994, para 4). Through research conducted by the school districts, they have come to the conclusion that students who would’ve been “too shy to volunteer have admitted that they were glad they had been forced”.
