Many schools across America require students in the twelfth grade to perform a certain amount of community service hours to graduate. Community service can be beneficial to the community and to students. However, if community service is required to graduate, it will be detrimental to students and as such, community service hours should not be required for seniors to graduate. Some people believe that community service is beneficial, it will be harmful to students and their time. As a senior in high school, I can testify that the majority of my time is spent with homework, college applications, and responsibilities at home. As it stands right now, I barely have any free time to myself. With this in mind, I am not the only student who has pre existing responsibilities that takes up almost all of my day. Almost every student within the senior` class spend the majority of their time like I do; homework, college applications, chores, then sleep. If community service hours were required, those hours would take up the miniscule amount of free hours senior students have to themselves. From this, requiring, or rather forcing, students to complete service hours violates the Constitution and breaks the law. The Constitution states "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." For this law to be nullified, a student would have to commit a crime to receive the punishment of community service. The only “crime” senior students have committed is the desire to graduate.
