Why is Haiti one of the poorest Nations?
Haiti is one of the Caribbean Countries located in the Island of Hispaniola. It is next to the Dominican Republic. Haiti was one of the world’s wealthiest countries, in terms of its natural resources, similar to some countries in Africa. Haiti is now one of the poorest countries in the world. It is in disarray and economically hopeless without a clear vision of significant improvement in the very near future. The vast majority of the Haitian People are living in abject poverty and are jobless. They are hungry, unsafe and discouraged. Christopher Columbus did not discover a lost or an unknown land. There was a developing civilization of Native Americans. Some of the early Spanish historian and observers claimed there were as many as 3,000,000 to 4,000,000 of indigenous people living in Haiti. Arawak is the common group to which they belong, and describes especially the general language which this group of Native Americans shared. They extended from Venezuela through the Caribbean and Central America. Anyway, the particular group of Arawak speaking people who lived on the island of Haiti were the Taino Indians. The Tainos had their own lifestyle, housing, dress, food, agriculture, defense, transportation, myth and religion. Their culture was very gentle, peaceful and they also practiced polygamy. Their lifestyle consisted of happiness, friendliness, and a highly organized system. Each society was a small kingdom and the leader was called a Cacique. The Tainos were also great at cultivating their own food. For example, some of the food they grew were corn (maize), squash, beans, peppers, sweet potatoes, yams and peanuts. The French colony expanded and became one of the richest in the history of the world. An agricultural economy based on slave labor grew sugar cane, coffee, the dye indigo, cotton, tobacco and many exotic flavoring which were in high demand in Europe and Asia. The French colonial slave system was brutal and it lasted for three hundred years. In that era, French vendors extended in the entire Europe and near Asia, creating a successful economy for Paris. This brings me to the Haitian Revolution.
After three hundred years of slavery Haitian people decided to revolt. In 1791 through 1804, the Haitian Revolution took place, and it was one of the bloodiest, most brutal and impressive revolutions in African history. It has often been described as the largest and most successful slave rebellion in the Western Hemisphere. Haitians wiped out the French completely.
