Frederick Douglass was a born African American slave who is iconic when it comes to ending slavery. In this essay, I will profess why Frederick Douglass is one of the most influential person when it comes to American history. (The essay will be using MLA format.) We will go over topics such as: early life, role in history, what he did and why he was important. Frederick Douglass was born around 1818 (The exact year is unknown), and initially lived with his Grandmother, and was born into slavery. Then, at a young age, he was selected to live in the home of the plantation. One may have been his Father. His Mother had died when he was around 10. He was eventually sent to a Baltimore home of Hugh Ault. At the age of 12 he was taught the alphabet by Auld’s wife. He was president of the Freedman’s Savings bank and as chargé d'affaires (Char·gé d'af·faires, SHärˌZHā däˈfer, noun, a diplomatic official who temporarily takes the place of an ambassador) for the Dominican Republic. Which he resigned after two years because of U.S. policies. He was later appointed minister-resident and consul-general to the Republic of Haiti. Which he also held for two years (1889 - 1891). He was also nominated for Vice president, without his consent, by Victoria Woodhull’s running mate. Though he never campaigned, this marked the first time a black person was on the ballot for presidency.

In conclusion a Frederick Douglass was an Equal Rights Opportunist, who took his life experiences and took the opportunities given to him to try and abolish slavery whilst also starting an equal rights movement. With his life starting with slavery, Douglass learned that slavery was wrong. As his protests went on, he inspired many Americans to join him.
