Why I Want To Pursue A Degree In Forensic Science

Throughout my school life, I have taken an intense interest in science and I presume this was instilled into me from early age by my mother, a physics teacher. Growing up my mum would not only talk about all sorts of science topics but would encourage me to carry out experiments with bulbs and batteries; chemistry sets and even a microscope. As a child I saw things smaller than myself, now, given the opportunity, I want to learn about them and use this knowledge in the real world.

I think my interest in forensic science stemmed from watching CSI which sounds like a cliché, however I believe that this was a natural progression from Scooby-Doo and the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I initially liked them for the problem solving but now I admire how they teach one to connect the dots and observe the world we live in.

During the past year I have started reading books regarding our use of science, ethically and how humanity can benefit from it. I am aware that some of the work can be repetitive however new developments in science have produced incredible results and solved cases many years after the crime. Forensic evidence is getting more and more important in criminal investigation as criminals become more adept at covering their tracks. The range of techniques and therefore discoveries constantly increases so the career prospects are varied but plentiful. Working in a forensic laboratory would be enormously gratifying, giving the chance to make a contribution to the world by dissecting the evidence which can make a case, often when all other proof is
