Americans spent almost $63 billion on pets in one year. Americans like their pets, they often think of them as family or friends. They usually take very good care of them. They buy food and toys for them. They take them to the Veterinarian when they are sick. Veterinarians are needed where pets and other animals need to be cared for.

People who love animals can choose to work with them as a career. They can be an animal doctor or D.V.M (Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine). They can help big animals like pigs and cows or small animals like mice, cats and dogs that are sick. They can work with horses on a farm or ranch. They can even work with a giraffe in a zoo. Large animal veterinarians will be trained to take care of bigger animals like zebras, lions and cows. They are very important because Farms and ranchers help to provide us with food. Some animals will help us with clothing such as sheep who give us wool. Others help with transportation and entertainment such as horses and zoo animals.

Veterinarians need to like animals and enjoy being around them. Veterinarians work hard and long. They are needed at all times and in many different areas of animals care. They may work Thanksgiving day or on Sunday. Sometimes they will go in to take care of an animal even if they are at home relaxing or out playing with friends and a dog. They will work in an office, hospital, farm, zoo, houses and sometimes even in the wild.
