Helping out a community is extremely important and self-rewarding. It’s always nice to give back to your community that you’re a part of. I was taught that being a good person means to feel compassion, guilt, and empathy and I have taken that with me everywhere. These qualities are necessary when wanting to help others. It is important to give back to your community to meet people, make a difference, and gain confidence.
Volunteering exposes you to many people from your community in a positive way. Building relationships with others is very important and shows character. The volunteers and staff you work with can become your best friends and/or help you in the future with references and more. When I volunteered at the library, I had a partner who worked the same hours. We found it to be easier and faster to work together and eventually built a friendship. It made volunteering fun. I had to talk to many different kinds of people, not only the other volunteers, but the people in need of help.

When you give back to your community, it’s important to understand that you are helping real life, human beings, just like you. You are making someone’s day. It’s important to put yourself in their shoes and see how much you are meaning to them. This is where empathy comes in. In order to really make a difference by doing community service, you have to understand the people you’re working with. I use that for life outside of community service as well, most especially with my closest friends and family. There are people in my life that I love and would do anything for. They are loyal to me and vise versa. That means we are there for each other and share empathy.
