In life, there are high schoolers that want to do something with their life. That moment high schoolers hit a junior almost senior year, they have to think about what they want to do with their lives. If they either want to go to college, just work, have a career, or more. “According to a 2011 survey, about 60 percent of them will go to their first-choice schools. For many of them, going away to college will be like crossing the Rubicon. They will leave their families -- their homes -- and probably not return for many years, if at all.” If students stay home or close to home for college, the chances are they can get distracted and probably fail or get kicked out. When a young adult decided to go to college they have a very big decision to make about what their future will hold and where their future will begin. Once the decision has been made and college has begun, new friends are made and the actions they do shape who they will become. Weekends come and go, but the decisions that are made are different for each and every individual that attends college. There are those who choose to stay on campus and spend the weekend doing things around school with new friends, others choose to go home for different reasons, such as being homesick and wanting to be with family or spending the time off of school for work to help pay for tuition, also there are the students who choose to go to other institutions to see new friends they have made or visit old ones from high school. What I am attempting to understand is with my target population, is not only what the group chooses to do with their weekend time, but also to try and understand why they choose to do what they do with that time.
As the economy evolves and the job market continues to get more competitive, it’s becoming harder to have a successful career without some kind of college degree. The main point to Caroline Bird’s article is that college has never been able to work its magic for everyone (15). I totally agree with this statement. Many of the high school graduates today are not mature enough to attend college immediately out of high school. Since they have been in school for thirteen years, students are thinking of some “me” time after graduation. They are not ready to settle down in a serious academic environment. My oldest daughter graduated from high school in the spring of 2009 then attended her first semester of college the following fall. She dropped out after her first semester because college was harder than she thought. She was working part-time in addition to going to school full time. There was always an outside distraction to keep her from her studies. Her grades were positive proof that students must be serious about college to gain something from attending to college.
