Why Do People Work For Free

As a general rule I am not an advocate of working for free. I feel strongly that people are more likely to value what they have to pay for. We may queue for the free goodie bags and fight for the free gifts being handed out, but often those things end up at the back of a cupboard, untouched.

We have to value ourselves and putting a fair price on our efforts conveys our own sense of worth to our clients and customers. However, there are times when it is important to consider working for free.

- There may be times when we are offered the opportunity of broadcasting our professional face and our skills to a wider audience, previously unavailable to us. This may be speaking at a conference or demonstrating our talents at a big event. Many people …show more content…

It can be almost an audition, demonstration or interview, but is an important time to show a potential customer or client that we have the necessary skills and confidence to deliver the goods or services they are looking for.

- Newly qualified people often prefer to work for free for a time, until they have had more experience and become more confident. Not charging takes the pressure off and allows them to take their time and not feel the need to appear as super-confident and proficient.

- Putting something back into society is another reason why people may work for free. Some people may select certain clients or situations that they feel deserve not to have to pay. This is not charity work, but simply selecting situations that they feel are worthy or deserving of some good fortune.

- Working for free can provide an opportunity to learn new skills. We may volunteer to work as an assistant or apprentice in return for being taught some important enhancements to what we already know. This may be done as an exchange where we teach each other something in return, or we simply work as a volunteer and learn something instead of
