the fact that my extended family is very well educated. One the few questions people ask after income status is education of father and mother. Most of my friends proudly say that they will be the first of their family to go to college. They would share how it is a really big deal for them and how their parents are so proud. I would celebrate with them but not know what that feels like because I am not the first of my family to go to college. In fact, not only am I not the first, I have aunts and uncles who have gotten full scholarships and prestigious degrees from UCLA, UC Berkeley, and the Univeristy of Pacific. It was an expectation that I would go to college. On top of that, it was an expectation that I would either go beyond my aunts and uncle and go to an Ivy League school or remain par with them in the UC system. There was no cause for celebration when I got into other lesser-known liberal arts schools or the lower UC’s. When the results of all my applications came out, UC Berkeley was the “best” one Not having finacial aid meant that the dream of doing to school for 5K was out the window. The stake of doing well was that much higher because I did not want to waste my parents’ money. The fact that my family has a history of doing well in prestigious college puts a greater pressure on me. I had more to prove to the college or univeristy because they know I come from an educated background. The formula of being low income, first generation, and smart did not work for me. I am not low income, which means the price I pay is far greater and therefore will contribute to which college I go. I am not a first generation college student which means colleges expect more from me. It is no longer enough to be smart; I had to be smarter because my parents and family are educated and they should have openned more resources for me above my
