Why Do High School Students Achieve A Level 4?

In high school, there are a huge amount of problems, some of which relate to students. In these “student problems”, it may not be possible for some students to afford to continue attending school. Other students may have enough wealth, however they may have a different problem of not putting effort in school; rather than trying to aim high, they would be doing just enough to be getting by. A solution that could tackle both these two problems would be rewarding the higher accomplishing students. High school students should be paid for achieving a level 4, as it would lower poverty rates and motivate students to put forth more effort in order to achieve higher results.

A level 4 is not hard to get, it only requires a change in attitude and a little increase in work effort. In fact, many students already have a level 4, as 47% of U.S. high school students had an ‘A’ average in 2016 (USA Today, 2017). This incentive is mainly for the level 2-3 students, who are close to reaching an 80%. Giving them this extra boost can help them with their studies and develop better learning habits. Incentives generally work on students to try and change their habits. For example, if a mother offers her child a meal at McDonalds every two weeks for washing the dishes every day. The child may become comfortable with the dishes and continue doing them throughout his/her life, even after the incentive is not present. Furthermore, these incentives can greatly increase school averages. As a student, it is to my experience that the majority of classes have a median of 80 or above. This means that these students will already be paid, and so the bandwagon effect will appear. Non-level 4 students will see that the majority of students are getting paid, and will try to achieve a level 4 themselves, and thus raising the medians and averages even higher. Lastly, it could be thought that this method may encourage students to cheat more for higher marks, but this can easily be solved by adding rules in tests such as “no lifting up your papers
