Drunk Drivers Do Not Deserve Freedom Angie Bass has experienced an event no mother should have to endure. Her story, told by the MADD (Mothers against Drunk Driving) website, is of how her car was struck by a repeat drunk driver. Her son Zack, the only passenger in the car, was injured fatally. Drunk driving can be stopped by imprisoning drivers after a single instance of driving drunk. The consequences of drunk driving are so obviously advertised yet people are still doing it. Every driver has seen highway signs warning against driving under the influence. We all know phrases like “Click it or ticket.” These irresponsible drivers are causing damage to society by causing car crashes and posing a major threat on the road. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation 10,322 deaths were caused by car accidents involving alcohol in 2012 alone. Sixty five percent of those people were drivers who drank enough alcohol to be legally drunk (Dept. of Transportation). That means the remaining deaths were those of people who did not make the irresponsible decision of driving under the influence. When people drive drunk they take the lives of innocent people into their hands. Drivers who are willing to take the risks of driving drunk deserve to be imprisoned. If they get away with it once they will think they can get away with it again. The United States government needs to punish irresponsible drivers. Imprisoning drunk drivers after a single offense will also discourage other potential drunk drivers from attempting to drive under the influence. They will see the consequences are
