Many trade routes allowed them to spread Islam further because when merchants were trading with foreign traders, they talked about what a great religion Islam was and encouraged the traders to follow it. Christianity on the other hand believes that Jesus is God the Son who became a human being. People receive eternal life by believing in Jesus and following his teachings. Christianity had a major impact on the West, particularly in the arts, philosophy, and society. From 750 AD to the early 1400s, Islam was gaining territory in all parts of Europe by invading the countries in uncommon ways such as creating a cultural fusion and a pocket of Muslims that are inhabiting the area. Christianity then made it’s rise in the Americas in the late 1400s with the Spanish missionaries that forced conversion on the people. Both religions have changed over the time for the people who believe in it, but have stayed central to their beliefs.
In today’s age, there are several controversies surrounding the religion of Islam, however, looking back on history, that was not always the case. Like every other religion, not everyone accepted it with open arms, but for some, it was a refuge. One such example was in West Africa. To better understand, it is important to understand what Islam stands for. Islam basically translates to mean submission and is a religion that stands for absolute monotheism. Unlike the other religious traditions such as Judaism and Christianity, Islam stands for complete submission to Allah’s will with no other supreme existing or believing that Jesus is his son. Started with the vision of Muhammad while on one of his retreats around early 600 CE, the Islamic faith quickly spread into the surrounding regions, initially by military conquests. However, no one was forced to convert as willingness is seen as the only legitimated way of converting someone. Dissatisfied with his life, he traveled to deserts, hills, and the wilderness surrounding Mecca, where he lived, to meditate and reflect. He became a new man through his revelations, which many of his followers believe Allah transmitted to him through his angel Gabriel. Islam was originally an Arab religion, but many different beliefs and practices were added to it, making it extremely popular and aiding in its rapid spread. As mentioned in World Civilization, “in 622 Muhammad left Mecca for Medina where his skilled leadership brought new followers.” In Medina, Muhammad became the religious authority in the area and he used this power to conquer Mecca, a holy place for Islamic believers. By the time of his death, he was able to have created a religious empire that controlled all of the Arabian Peninsula.
