The Shining is a horror novel by the American author Stephen King. It was published in 1977 and was King’s third published novel and first hardback bestseller, the success of which established King as a renowned horror author.

The Shining focuses on the life of five year old Danny Torrance, who has “the shining”, which allows him to read minds and experience premonitions, his mother Wendy, and his father Jack, who just accepted the job of winter caretaker at the Overlook Hotel, a haunted, isolated resort located in the Colorado Rockies. Jack is characterized as a recovering alcoholic and aspiring writer who has a history of anger issues (accidentally broke Danny’s arm before the story.)

Soon after he gets inside the hotel, he is discovered by Jack, who silently sneaks up behind him and smacks him in the jaw with a roque mallet (roque is similar to croquet.) Jack then goes off in search of Danny. At this point, Jack is completely taken over by the hotel and has utterly lost his sanity. As Jack pursues Danny through the hotel, he regains control of himself long enough to tell Danny that he loves him, and to run away. Jack then loses control again and harshly bashes his face and skull with the mallet, making him unrecognizable. Danny suddenly realizes, and tells Jack that, the unstable boiler in the basement is about to explode, sending Jack in a frantic rush down to the basement to dump the pressure. Meanwhile, Danny runs down to the lobby and finds that his mother has woken up Mr Hallorann, who leaps into immediate action when Danny says that the boiler is going to blow up.
