Titanic was the largest ship in the world. It was about 900 feet long and weighted 46000 tons. On April 14, 1912, the titanic collided with the iceberg and sank in three hours. The colliding caused the damage which was nearly 300 feet of the hull, the collision allowed water to flood six of sixteen major watertight compartments. However, the sixteen watertight did not work very well. There were about 2200 passengers and crew on the ship, and more than 1500 died. There are many reasons caused this accident: mistake of the manufacturer, mistake of the crew on board and mistake of the lifeboat placed. For this project, we will discuss the mistakes of the manufacturer. Failure Theory and analysis When the Titanic collided with the iceberg, the …show more content…
The lower part of the Titanic is divided into sixteen main watertight compartments, and if part of the hull is pierced and leaking, it can be easily closed. After the collision with the iceberg, the hull portion of six of these sixteen compartments was destroyed. The sealed off compartments were completed immediately after the damage was achieved, but when the bow of the ship began to pitch forward from the weight of the water in that area of the ship, the water in some of the compartments began to spill over into adjacent compartments. Although these compartments were called watertight, but in fact they were only watertight horizontally; their tops were open and the walls extended only a few feet above the waterline [4]. If the transverse bulkheads had been a few feet higher, the water would have been better contained within the damaged compartments. Consequently, the sinking would have been slowed, possibly allowing enough time for nearby ships to help. However, because of the extensive flooding of the bow compartments and the subsequent flooding of the entire ship, the Titanic was gradually pulled below the waterline [Figure

The Titanic worked like you would expect. Just like any other boat or ship, it floated because it weighed less than the amount of liquid it displaced. However, many factors contributed to the sinking of the Titanic. Rivets are very
"We are all going to die!" That is what 1500 people were thinking when the Titanic was going down, and they were right. The Titanic was the biggest ship in the world at the time. The Titanic hit an iceberg on April 14, 1912, and over 1500 lives were lost to the deep Atlantic. The person responsible was J. Bruce Ismay. Ismay left the ship with woman and children still on board when he could of saved other people, he ultimately decided for the Titanic to only have 20 lifeboats, and Ismay owned the company that made and designed the Titanic and all of its flaws.
The Titanic That Hit an Iceberg “...there are plenty of lifeboats in the vicinity, they’ll be with us any moment now”. -Violet Jessop The Titanic was a very tragic event and was really scary for everyone on the ship and in the lifeboats. The sinking of the Titanic was caused by hitting an iceberg, and the results were that the Titanic sunk and many people died.
In the text, it states “She had 15 watertight steel compartments that were supposed to render her unsinkable...the boat was as safe and sound as the shipbuilder could make it.” Another it’s very well known today is because the Titanic was called the “unsinkable” ships. Even though the ship sunk people still call it that to this day because it was one of the most luxurious ship that was made in its time period. “So the “ill-fated” liner duty finds its nemesis at the hands of an iceberg on
If there had been no compartments, the incoming water would have spread out, and the Titanic would have likely remained afloat for another six hours.
The ship, R.M.S Titanic, has been popular several different times in a little over 100 years. The first time in April 1912 when it first sailed for North America. This great ship was said to be unsinkable. Many errors led to the major tragedy of the Titanic, including the life boats were not all there or filled as much as they should have been, the ship tried to go full speed to break the iceberg, and the Californian ship did not respond the Carpathia had saved the rest.
Damage beyond the hull was also witnessed that allowed for the influx of water. Whenever the forepeak tank was damaged, “six watertight compartments flooded with water, causing the ship to sink faster than it should have,” (Bassett). The Titanic, being the largest ship at this time, should have stayed afloat for two to three days after striking the iceberg. Within three hours, the Titanic sank, which never should have
Also, there was problems in how the Titanic was modeled and built. The position in where the bolts were put were too far down. The water level had risen faster due to the fact that it was built wrong. The fact that the Titanic split in two was tragic to most people because they believed it wasn´t capable of that. Allieyha believes that it was the builders of the Titanic and Captain Smith's fault due to the fact that the Titanic sank.
(page 1)The stern of the boat rose to a 45 degree angle before the hull split in two. The icy water had shattered the metal and all the water had flowed into the seal tight water compartments. Not to mention, the reactions of the Titanic. People on board were desperate to get off the Titanic once they were aware of what was happening. For example, in the article “The Sinking of the Titanic, 1912”, Elizabeth Shutes said, “Then, and not until then, did I realize the horror of an accident at sea”.
The reason behind this thought was because of the way the ship was put together. Towards the bottom of the ship, there were sixteen water tight bulkhead compartments. The unique factor about these compartments was that with a single close of a steel, watertight door, if the ship were to get water on the inside, the rush water could be cut off and isolated, essentially preventing sinking from occurring (“The Build of the Titanic”). While Harland and Wolff were hired constructed the ship’s outside and framework, Mr. Thomas Andrews, a famous architect, was in charge of the interior design. The actual construction was finished on May 31, 1911 (“The Build of the Titanic”).
One of the most famous ideas, person, etc., God, was said he could not force this ship to fail. So, the man who painted the sky, presented Earth with oceans, and built mountains couldn’t sink a ship? If the people of the world had not been so gullible and intrigued to the false, could the ship have survived? It is something to be discussed, but theoretically, yes. If the general public had not pushed the idea of an invincible ship to the Captain of the Titanic, Captain Edward Smith, by default he would have been significantly more cautious when directing and handling the massive craft. The Titanic was revolutionary to modern luxury liners, but society had to ruin its magnificent potential. Overall the conflict between society and the Titanic was slightly indirect. The antagonists all thought they were up talking the ship, and describing it as if it were a messiah. But, the protagonist vessel really couldn’t meet the bar of these expectations. While the antagonists were not “mean” or “cruel” per say, they did contribute to the infamous sinking of the most famous ship of the 20th
The Titanic, which was 882 feet in length was strong enough to carry just over 2,220 passengers, forty tons of potatoes, over 6,000 pounds of butter, two tons of coffee, 20,000 bottles of beer and stout, 15,000 bottles of mineral water and hundreds of stacks of mail. The Titanic was legally commissioned to carry mail by the British Monarch and the United States (Microsoft Encarta). With all this excess weight aboard, thoughts of the "Unsinkable" ship going down never crossed anyone's minds.
As the water flooded into the first five compartments, the water would pass the water line. Once it passed the water line, the water would start to flood into the rest of the compartments like falling dominos. Since one-half of the ship kept flooding in with water, the water would slowly start to break the ship in half. Once one-half of the ship went under the other half that was floating above the water would snap and break off. Thus separating the Titanic into two pieces laying at the sea floor. The Titanic would ultimately sink on April 15, 1912. With the ship sinking, there are three factors on why the Titanic sank. The three factors are human error, corporate negligence, and design error. The three factors are equally responsible on why the ship sank.
The Titanic, one of the biggest well known tragedies in history. The horrific accident was a catastrophe that impacted the world. Devastating news that this colossal ship everyone thought was indestructible had sunk from a collision with an iceberg. But the question is, could the terrible tragedy have been stopped? Why did the Titanic give so easily following the hit?
