In Chasing Lincoln’s Killer, by James L. Swanson, the main characters were; John Wilkes Booth, Dr. Leale, Abraham Lincoln (even though he dies.) When John Wilkes Booth (a.k.a Booth) found out that the North had won the Civil War, he felt anger and disgust but he could do nothing. Booth had one plot that the book talked about and that was to kidnap the president and sell him to the leaders of the South but that plot never got put into action. When booth went to Ford's theatre got a letter, Booth worked at the theatre, the letter that said that the President of the United states would be visiting ford's theatre quickly he put a plot into works. First he went to get accomplices and they too would kill someone that night. When the time had come to Booth snuck into the President’s box, not even noticed he pulled out a gun and shot a bullet into the left side and under the left ear of the President's head. That didn’t kill the President, yet. The assassination of John F. Kennedy led many Americans to distrust their own federal government. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed the Warren Commission to investigate Kennedy's death, but the way that they handled it resulted in many American citizens to lose trust in their country. The Warren Commission concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in the assassination of President Kennedy, but the view of the general public was that the killing was a conspiracy. They believed that the Warren Commission withheld important evidence about the event that took place on November 22, 1963. Many also accused the Warren Commission of not fully investigating the crime which caused a large number of American citizens to lose trust in their own government.
As Oswald’s motives remain unknown, many scholars and investigators yearned to find the key to this mysterious crime, and came up with plausible theories searching for motives behind the assassination. In 1960 on July 13th Johnson was nominated for President of the United States by Sam Rayburn, a Speaker of the House of Representatives. On November 8th Johnson was elected Vice President of the United States and was re-elected to his third term in the United States Senate. On November 22nd, Johnson had become the 36th President of the United States after the assassination of John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Texas. Due to all the aftershock of Kennedy’s death, Johnson was given a climate that gave him the opportunity to finish the unfinished work of Kennedy’s New Frontier. Once Johnson became President a couple of very important pieces of legislation were passed. The first was the Civil Rights Bill that Kennedy had promised to sign. The second was the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. Johnson also did great things involving the Vietnam war, the Dominican Republic, He passed the Higher Education Act, Johnson also worked on the Elimination of Poverty and Stopping racial injustice. Johnson often was noticed as an ambitious, tireless, and imposing figure. He was ruthlessly effective at getting legislation passed. Johnson usually worked a number of 18 to 20 hour days with no break and usually was always absent of any leisure activities.
