Lincoln’s Assassination It all began in 1865, after the Civil War ended. A man by the name of John Wilkes Booth had a plan in March of 1865 to kidnap or kill the president. Either way, it changed the United States forever. Shortly after the Civil War on April 9th and the confederates surrendered, John had a plan to kill the president. He wanted to kill him because he said, “If he gets a second term, he will become a dictator.” In order to do this Booth hired spies and confederate soldiers to help him. So on the night of April 14th, 1865, Booth slipped in to Lincoln’s suite at 10:15 P.M. at Ford’s Theatre. Booth then shot Lincoln in the back of the head and slipped away before anyone could catch him the same night. Booth then ran away, escaping
Most Americans know John Wilkes Booth as the assassin of Abraham Lincoln. Shot at a play at Ford’s Theater on April 14th, 1865. However, the names of the conspirators that surrounded Wilkes Booth are relatively unknown, especially that of Mary Surratt. Mary Surratt, a mother and boardinghouse proprietor, was arrested and tried for the assassination of Abraham Lincoln along with her son, John Surratt. Pleas from her family, lawyer, and fellow conspirators did not allow her to escape her fate, and she was hanged for her crimes on July 7th, 1865.

In Chasing Lincoln’s Killer, by James L. Swanson, the main characters were; John Wilkes Booth, Dr. Leale, Abraham Lincoln (even though he dies.) When John Wilkes Booth (a.k.a Booth) found out that the North had won the Civil War, he felt anger and disgust but he could do nothing. Booth had one plot that the book talked about and that was to kidnap the president and sell him to the leaders of the South but that plot never got put into action. When booth went to Ford's theatre got a letter, Booth worked at the theatre, the letter that said that the President of the United states would be visiting ford's theatre quickly he put a plot into works. First he went to get accomplices and they too would kill someone that night. When the time had come to Booth snuck into the President’s box, not even noticed he pulled out a gun and shot a bullet into the left side and under the left ear of the President's head. That didn’t kill the President, yet. When Booth tried to leave he was stopped by General Henry Rathbone, they had a knife fight while trying to stop both of them from leaving, although Booth got away jumping from the President's box and onto the stage shouting "Sic Semper Tyrannis" (Chasing Lincoln's Killer, by James L. John Surratt’s mother, Mary Surratt, provided the men with a place to stay and moved to Washington D.C., and eventually Mary Surratt would be found guilty of assistance in the crime and executed, becoming the first woman to be put to death by the government.
