For this interview I define professional success as excelling in your respective field, personal success as providing a great quality of life for your family and being proud of who you become. Like the popular anecdote where a person is told “If you decide to be a solder, become a general. If you decided to be a businessman, become the CEO. If you decide to become a painter, be the Picasso.”, my family believes that believe that whatever you decide to do, you should strive to excel. My goal is to be able to start generational wealth for my family, while being able to be proud of what I do. My grandpa tried to be professional in every situation he could, and always emphasised responsibility. One day when me and my brother were fighting in the car while my grandpa was parking the car and we ended up causing him to hit the car behind him. He took the opportunity to teach us about responsibility, we ended up waiting for almost two hours for the other person too come back so my grandpa could apologize and pay for any damages. My grandpa’s professionalism allowed him to build a large network within the Chinese community. To this day if he walks into the older restaurants in Chinatown the manager will always come out and comp part of the meal. He also firmly believed that the same professionalism should be extended to strangers. My grandfather has practiced karate every day for over 50 years, sometimes his neighbours would ask him about what he’s doing and he always took the time to explain his dedication to karate and the importance of constant practice. Years later we found out that one of his neighbours was Rachel McAdams, and even though he didn’t know who she was he still treated her like he would treat any other person. My grandpa also was one of the most hardworking person I have ever encountered. My grandpa firmly believes that if he is able he should do the job himself. Many times when me and my brother show up during a snowstorm to help clear all the snow, my grandpa would be halfway done shoveling. He credits his success to sheer hard work and determination. When we used to get report cards, no matter how well we did he always made sure we worked hard and didn’t rest on our laurels.
