A study completed by the National Center for Education Statistics concluded that 68.4 percent of students enrolled in college immediately following high school graduation. In their four-year course, eighty percent will use alcohol, making underage consumption highly prevalent in the average college student’s life. The problem with consumption of alcohol in college is that most students drink to escape reality rather than use it for its taste. These binge-drinking, irresponsible actions lead to health problems from alcohol abuse or addiction and make alcohol the fourth leading preventable cause of death in the United States. Long term effects, including death, not only affect the individual, but society. The consequences act as a domino effect, dragging people down the path of illness and social/financial insecurity. The domino effect needs to be stopped. Although alcohol can be enjoyed in moderation, alcohol abuse and addiction greatly affects the modern society through the individual physically, socially, and economically. Throughout my college experience, I have gotten to know the drug more than I have liked to. I’ve seen it consume my friend’s life not only physically, socially, and economically, but also academically and spiritually. When I’m not studying, and hanging out with friends, I’m holding back hair while my roommate throws up or making sure she is breathing before I fall asleep. She pushes back papers until the hour they are due and she’ll miss Sunday mass because she’s recovering from a hangover. The pattern I see in her and in other college students is that they believe their actions are acceptable.
