There is many different ways which the concept of identity has been defined and studied by social scientists. Some of these scientists include, Coatsworth, Shwartz, Srivastava, and Furstenburg. The actual dictionary definition of “identity” is, the fact of being who or what a person or thing is. An individuals’ personality characterstics also relate to their sense of identity. These types of characterisitcs are known as, the “Big Five'”. This is a term used to describe the five broad traits of humans. Coatworth, found empirical evidence regarding doing certain activities. This study was conducted by Sanjay Srivastava. The results came from people taking a test with questions. The five traits were founded by John A. Johnson he wrote descriptions of the five domains and thirty subdomains. These descriptions are based on an extensive reading of the scientific literature on personality measurement. The five include, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness An extraversion person enjoys being with people are full of energy and often experience positive emotions. He believed that having values and goals. In this article it talks about four characteristics that relate to ones personality. The first being forclusure, which is a stage of self-identity discovery in which an individual has an identity but hasn't explored other options or ideas. Sometimes an identity crisis can cause a person to leave the identity foreclosure stage. The next is moratorium which is the state of active exploration in the relative absence of commitment. Moratrium and forclusure are oppisites, moratrium meaning youre trying to find yourself nd figure out your true ideneity while forclusure is giving up in a way. Achievement is another refers to an individual's desire for significant accomplishment, mastering of skills, control, or high standards. The last term that helps define a persons idenity is, diffusion.
