What if the World Went Vegan?
Albert Einstein once said, “Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.” A vegan is a person who does not eat animal products, including fish, meat, seafood, eggs, and dairy products; all plant based. The worldwide rate of vegetarians is fairly low. There are currently 4-5% vegetarians in Canada and in the United States alone. About 30% of India’s population is vegetarian due to religious reasons. The world has nearly 20 billion chickens, 1.5 billion cows, over a billion sheep, and nearly a billion pigs. About 33 million kilometers of land are being used for pastures. Dr. Seres recommends 0.8 to 0.9 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. For example, a human that weighs about 150lb. would need about 55grams of protein per day. Vegans have healthier protein diets than carnivores do by accumulating their protein throughout the day. Meat eaters receive all the protein needed in a day in one meal. “An 8oz steak is about 60 grams of protein, so if you eat that, you are done for the day (Mitchell).” Since vegans accumulate their protein, they don’t overeat protein producing a healthy diet plan. About 70% of Americans are dying from their food diets. Heart diseases will kill half, one third of meat eaters will endure cancer, and one quarter of them will die from it. Therefore, we can no longer ignore the facts if we want to live long and healthy lives as said by Surgeon General C. Everett Koop. Diet and health have been shown to have an inseparable link through many studies (Lyman viii). A vegan diet supports healthy weight loss from the high fiber and nutrient density, nutrients with fewer calories. The nutrients density may help limit hunger and cravings to overeat. For example, in Hawaii people center their diets on taro, poi, and sweet potato. Most people need three to four pounds of food to satisfy their hunger, you would need to eat about 9 pounds of taro and poi, and over five pounds of sweet potato’s to get a full day worth of calories (Marcus 47). Since obesity is a risk factor for most disease, losing weight would help treat other
