Mark Twain was trying to get a big message about the nature of society that he’s trying to portray by using symbolism. The symbolism in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, had a lot of bad luck through the novel. Back luck is an unfortunate state resulting from unfavorable outcomes. The bad luck was read when Mark Twain writes about the white fog, rattlesnakes, and Tom Sawyer being shot in the leg. Having these examples of bad luck in the novel are important because they contribute to the imagery and overall plot of the story that Mark Twain was writing.

Huck plays a prank on Jim by putting a dead rattlesnake by him while he is asleep. The rattlesnake is a symbol of bad luck in itself, but the event after his prank is unfortunate. This event is unfortunate because the rattlesnake’s mate comes and bites Jim in the leg. Jim’s leg swells up and doesn’t get better until three days later. Twain was trying to convey bad luck by writing this event.
Back luck appears when Mark Twain writes about Tom Sawyer being shot in the leg. Tom, Huck, and Jim were planning Jim’s escape for weeks. There were men with guns that are gathered in front of their house. Huck and Tom get Jim out by the hole they made. They were running when one of the bullets hits Tom in the leg while he is trying to get over the fence. Tom made a noise while going over the fence which attracted the men’s attention in the first place. Getting shot in the leg was bad luck for Tom.
