This weeks case incident had many different issues that management had with the changes that are happening in the company. One issue that was present is that the general manager of the plastics division is retiring and has named a new one. This new manager has some people worried that he might change things from the way they were to something not beneficial for the company. The manager’s name is Wallace Thomas. Rusty (who is the general manager of the plastic divisions 2 factories) thinks that the new GM is going to change the way rusty run’s his factories. When rusty was under Ed sullivans management(the GM who retired), he let rusty run the factories however he wanted it. Ed believed that Rusty was a great manager and produced products on …show more content…
Rusty should go by one of the five practices of exemplary leadership. These five practices are as follows : Model the way, Inspire a shared vision, Challenge the process, Enable others to act, Encourage the heart (Goode). The first practice “Model the way” describes leaders as clarifying their values and setting an example (Goode). If rusty showed them a way that clarifies his values in an example than he can be an exemplary leader. The second practice “Inspire a shared Vision” states that leaders who follow this practice get other managers to have the same mind set about running their business and make it run good (Goode). If Rusty gets other managers and gets their input on how they run their division then he and the other managers can have the same mind set and become more effective leaders. “Challenge the Process” means that leaders take risks and try different ways of managing their company (Goode). Rusty should try a different way of managing in which he has more trust in his employees and let them do their job how they want to. “Enable others to act” means that leaders can make other people fight for the cause by making people stronger and follow their leadership (Goode). If Rusty makes his employees feel strong about their position at work then they can have more trust in him and follow his leadership. Finally “ Encourage the Heart” means that Giving credit when it 's due and people know that they are valued (Goode). If the employees know that their work is valued and reminding them of that, then the company will be successful. I believe that if management in the Plastic’s company follows these practices, then the company will go in a great
1. There are numerous methods, characteristics, and motives for proper leadership. In my opinion, leadership is the overall process of unifying a team toward completing a common goal. Several key people in my life influenced this definition and how I lead.
In 2009 when Sergio Marchionne took over one of the Chrysler plants had around 200 workers and by the end of the summer over 4500 people were employed; at that location alone. During his 60 minute interview Mr. Marchionne gives a lot of acknowledgement to his employees crediting them for the successful turnaround in the company. This shows us that he is the type of leader who would motivate through the positive reinforcement theory because his positivity in the comments to his employees shows that he isn’t taking full credit for all the work that was done and the success that has happened. When Mr. Marchionne became CEO of Chrysler he moved his office down where the engineers work on the 4th floor. “No need for a top-floor penthouse, which sits empty where a chairman and three vice chairmen used to be, when a fourth floor office will suffice.” (Allpro.com). This was one of his first step in creating change of direction in a company which was used to being lead by leaders who didn’t fully engage with the employees. Another point to mention, and a result of his close contact with the engineer, is that the engineers were performing for him and were able to get a brand new car model designed and produced in less than a year; which proves his leadership style works. In order for a great leader to get this kind of effective cooperation from his employees shows his skills in leadership. By giving them positive reinforcement and being a motivational leader with high hopes with an optimistic vision for the future he was able to get them to perform and meet his standards and goals in a short allotted amount of time. This constrictive timeframe was strategic in reentering the automotive industry with a new product to boost sales and pro...
Suddenly, some companies become extremely successful, while rest of them unfortunately remains a failure. There can be off-course a lot of reasons for this failure but one of the main reasons is lack of leadership qualities. There are many s...
In order for a leader to be a leader he/she must begin with the assumption that you are the one who matters most. As a leader you have to possess that level of confidence in yourself that you are capable of leading yourself “before you can lead others”. And when you develop this belief then you are better able of affirmative influence “on others”.
There are several ways to define leadership, but what sets effective leaders apart from commonplace managers are their extraordinary actions and the successes that result. In The Leadership Challenge, James Kouzes and Barry Posner claim leaders that employ The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership are much more effective than those who do not (2012, p. 25). This paper will be reviewing my assessment findings, exploring my strengths and weaknesses, examining my personal-best leadership story, and detailing a specific area of development.

According to Maurice Flanagan, “Some are born leaders, some achieve leadership and some have leadership thrust upon them, which of these are you, or would you rather not bother?“
Leader should have the shared responsibility and collaborative quality. For example, instead of making the strategy alone, he will gather the idea of all brilliant workers to increase the productivity of the organisation.
John Terrill, an experienced professional with a unique approach to managing, was brought into to DGL International to correct the productivity issues evident in the technical services division. As a leader, his approach would require professionalism, as well as an alternative method of management to restore the lacking work ethic of the engineers. Through investigative research into well-defined leadership styles, behaviours and power types, the following case study questions are discussed below. Using Paul Hershey and Ken Blanchard’s situational leadership theory, I compare the autocratic with the democratic approaches to leadership, as well as discuss the four styles of leading: telling, selling, participative or delegating. I also address the type of power Terrill appears to possess over his followers and compare multiple options. Though Terrill proved to be a successful development to the company’s management team, the repercussions and advantages of alternative approaches are also addressed in conjunction with Robert House’s path-goal theory.
Leadership is defined as a process by which an individual influences others to obtain goals. There are three aspects that should be addressed when explaining leadership. One aspect is that leadership is a social influence process; leadership could not exist without a leader and one or more followers. Another leadership aspect is compliance; all of the leader’s directions must be complied with voluntarily. Compliance is what separates leadership from other influence-based formal authority. Finally, leadership results in the followers’ behavior, that is purposeful and goal-directed which must be in some organized setting (Leadership Theories and Studies, 2009).
Introduction People always talk about how important it is for companies to have a good leader, someone who not only keeps the blue numbers, but also achieves a loyalty from customers, pleasant working environment, successful business partnerships and ahead of the competition. To exercise effective leadership, the individual must meet certain parameters, which if they are carried out successfully all of them will ensure a long life to the organization. The relationship with partners should be based on trust. Do not just give employees a list of tasks, encourage their views so that their skills might be enhanced for advancement.
One of the practices of the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership is “Inspire a Shared Vision.” This practice is about looking ahead to future goals and enlisting followers who share the same vision as the leader to join their journey. This practice can be used by Sally since she is the senior manager at the MTCR company. Sally would be the one to chose people who share similar values and aspirations to her own to be on her team. She would also be the one to set the longer-term goals for herself and her team because she holds that titled leadership position. If Sally did that, she would exemplify the two commitments of this practice: envision the future by imagining exciting and ennobling possibilities and enlisting others by appealing to shared aspirations. Sally was able to implement this practice when she chose David to be on his team even though he wasn’t the best at technology. He shared some of the same values as Sally which is what she saw in him. The benefits of Sally using this practice are that she will be able to work at her goals alongside like-minded people. That makes it easier for her to facilitate innovation among her employees. It will also be easier for her to build and maintain relationships with the people she choses to be on her team because they hold values that are like her own. In workplace environments,
Leadership is essentially the ability to motivate. An effective leader can motivate others toward reaching a common goal. Leaders are different than managers in that leaders inspire others to do the work needed while managers generally tend to manage the tasks associated with completing the goal.
It is very important for managers at all levels to respond quickly and effectively to conflict within their workplace as the longer the conflict exists, the more damage it causes. For personal conflicts, the organization should have a published procedure for filing grievances:
After meeting with the president and listening to the issues and concerns regarding, Jack I would highly recommend for a personal improvement plan (PIP) to be developed. I would suggest for the president to have a one-on-one meeting with Jack regarding the negative feedback he has received from the staff. Jack should be fully aware of the expectations that are being sought as a result of this improvement plan. When laying out the areas of improvement, the first concern would be the negative attitude he has toward his staff. Next, would be to address the several complaints on company surveys from his department as well as outside of his department. These situations take time so I would recommend a 90-day plan with a follow up with the employees immediately after the plan has exhausted. The purpose of the PIP would be to improve employee morale, create a healthier work environment, and assure that the employees are receiving adequate support and resources needed to perform productively. Jack would also be informed of the consequences he could face if he is not compliant and open to this PIP. I would suggest for an outside,
