INTRODUCTION As new technologies arise, we observe new inventions that could facilitate the way we travel on today’s roads. One of those inventions that can facilitate and make safer the way we travel are autonomous cars, also known as, self-driving cars. With the advancement of technology, the way we travel can change in a near future. Autonomous cars are becoming more and more sophisticated every day. There are many companies that are testing self-driving cars daily, such as Waymo, Tesla, Google. One of the problems is, how do you tell an autonomous car what the best option in a critical situation is when it involves life or death. “Important ethical issue for autonomous vehicles; the algorithms being created for autonomous vehicles in situations of forced choice, such as whether to hit a parked car or a pedestrian on an ice-covered road” (Fleetwood, 2017, p. 533). This issue should concern many autonomous cars’ manufacturers who are developing autonomous cars. Autonomous cars companies need to find the best solutions to always minimize deaths and to always maintain that goal. Also, if an autonomous car algorithm fails and ends up crashing into another autonomous car, will the passenger will be blamed at all; since no one will drive this car, they will drive themselves, there will be no human errors, thus autonomous car’s insurance companies will have to come up with a solution to determine which car’s algorithm failed and which car is to blame for that specific crash; which insurance company will pay for the crash. The term autonomous refers to the capability of acting independently, or having the freedom to do so. A self-driving car is an autonomous car, which has the ability to sense its environment and navigating without any human operations. These types of cars are built to make safe and smart decisions on the road. In the past years, automobile companies have begun to introduce advanced driver assistance systems that are capable of parking, switching lanes, and braking in case of an emergency on their own, without the driver’s assistance. Automated vehicles are capable of maneuvering through street traffic, as well as other natural and man-made obstacles along the way. Therefore, this technology might completely change the methods of transportation.
Major incumbent companies expect that the autonomous driving systems will be ready for the market in five years. This may be optimistic, but by 2050, cars that drive themselves could well be major production units for companies like General Motors. GM first revealed in 2010 that it had been working on self-driving cars[1]. Last year, GM demonstrated that the prototypes can follow the pace of traffic, while allowing the driver to have his hands off the steering wheel.
Imagine having your life flash before your eyes while you were still wearing diapers. And imagine having a hot hunk of metal crash into you and shatter your sense of everything. When I was just three years old, I was the victim of a very scary car accident. While waiting to make a turn into my nursery school, my mom’s car was rear-ended by a car driving at 50 miles per hour. I remember how incredibly loud the collision was and even how the windows seemed to shiver in their rubber holders. Seeing my mom's head fly back and feeling the car swerve into the opposing traffic, I thought I was going to die. And why did this happen? Because the person driving behind us was texting on her phone and was not focused on the road. All of this, the emotional, physical, and financial damage, and the possibility of losing my mom's or my own life, could have been prevented if the car behind us was a driverless car. Briefly, a driverless car is capable of driving itself via an intricate system of cameras, sensors and computers. I propose that human drivers should be replaced with driverless cars because driverless cars are safer and more efficient.
In the past couple years, there has been a greater drive in making cars more technology based. The solution: self-driving cars. There are many different views on these new cars. Personally, I don’t think that they are practical. Self- driving cars are expensive and will not even expunge the risk of car accidents.
Since the advent of autonomous technology, self-driving cars have been expected to be the best solution to optimizing daily commuting efficiency meanwhile significantly reducing or even preventing traffic accidents and fatality by rectifying and removing possible human errors on the road. This will be made possible through new technological car advancements that will enable a car to be driverless. With technology increasing exponentially, and our everyday lives getting busier and busier, we need a solution. Weeks of productivity are lost each year by Americans (Pollette). Driverless cars will cause this issue to vanish by reducing delays and smoothing traffic flow (Winston). Most technology will have flaws, and this is also true for driverless cars’ technology. Improvements are being made to enhance the car (Pollette), but accidents will still take place. Despite the flaws, driverless cars will make trips shorter, and when trips are long, we will be able to multitask.
If an engineer makes a single mistake or does not do his job correctly then that could cost the lives of pedestrians and the safety of other cars on the road. In Joseph A. Dallegro’s article “ How Google’s Self-Driving Car Will Change Everything,” he claims, “... injured parties in a crash involving a self-driving car may choose to sue the vehicle's manufacturer, or the software company that designed the autonomous capability.” This goes to show that if one singular person makes a mistake, it could mean that multiple factors will be affected. However, this does not mean that all the blame should be put on the self-driving car, there is human error involved in there situations. Even if there is human error, the self-driving car can have mistakes throughout it if the maintenance of the car is not watched and cared for
