Autonomous Cars Future

The future of how autonomous cars will change the future of traffic is a debatable issue that researchers are looking to find a clear answer to. Some say that autonomous cars will enhance the driving experience and cut commute times substantially, but others argue that it will increase the overall traffic. Research has shown that autonomous cars have potential to decrease traffic congestion by introducing safer and more efficient driving technologies. The technologies will use a system of driving with features such as “lane centering, cruise control, and self-parking” (Sacks 13).This will ensure that the cars work together with other cars and navigation systems to reduce the overall commute time. The technologies that are yet to be developed, …show more content…

However, this would not result in a decrease in the amount of traffic but actually would increase congestion due to the high efficiency of the transportation. Autonomous driving technology would result from more people choosing autonomous cars rather than other fares such as buses, trains, and subways. Additionally, with the replacement of autonomous cars as the primary form of transportations, research and simulations suggest that this would “increase traffic about 25-35%” (PTUA 3). If the number of cars on the road continuously increase, more and more accidents will arise and will produce even more congestion. Self-driving cars may also contribute to congestion from their capability of longer road activity. Since they can operate without a driver, self-driving cars may stay parked less often. Not only will there be private autonomous cars in the future bat also autonomous cars with sharing rides among the people who depend on these vehicles. These changes will thrive in urban places because of the number of commuters who need to get to work on time and to avoid traffic on the roads. Sharing rides will benefit the people and environment by consuming, and causing less congestion on the roads. According to Uber, they will “combine aspects of taxi service… and car-share schemes” (PTUA 2), providing more public services to the community that will cause less traffic because of the number of cars on the road. Same deal with trains, providing a fast and efficient way of traveling through busy urban areas. Sharing rides will help the community, thus the number of parking spaces will be deducted because space will not be needed if there are autonomous cars. Instead, the parking lots may be turned into a station for autonomous taxis or may be built on for other stores.
