Since the early 1800s the United States began a mission of westward expansion. Americans believed that they were entitled to North America which brought upon Manifest Destiny. The concept of Manifest Destiny encouraged Americans to spread their civilization all the way to the Pacific Ocean, and even down into Mexico. Manifest Destiny was the starting point of the development of America in many different aspects. Manifest Destiny brought about the rights of the people therefore it influenced people to aspire for westward expansion. James K. Polk was a strong advocate of expansionism and made it evident throughout his presidency when he achieved the acquisition of Texas, Oregon, and California. The California Gold Rush erupted in 1848 when gold was found outside of Sacramento in the American river. There was a mass migration of people coming to California from all over the country, the world, to try and collect gold. The migration was not easy for the travelers coming in by ship or by land. Diseases such as dysentery and cholera spread amongst migrators. Having this influx of foreigners coming into the US brought about the superiority of the white men. Having no set laws to abide by during the gold rush, Americans acted out on discriminatory behavior and created their own and began heavily taxing foreigners. White miners were slaughtering thousands of Native Americans and made the remaining slaves. Not only did land that the Native Americans had once held as a whole became scattered amongst the United States, they were still being heavily discriminated against. (Doc 5, 8)
Desperate the negative aspects of Manifest Destiny, families in the US were prospering for themselves. Land was cheap so families could farm for themselves with access to better fertile land. There were better opportunities to start businesses such as trade or new industries being built. Having the advantage of the gold rush, it was possible to get rich quick with the gold. With new inventions of tools that helped miners or helped farmers in their lives made life a bit more easier. The population doubled which in turn helped America economically. (Doc. 2,
