I thought the poem was relatable and interesting. Facebook is a part of mainstream media. In a way, its supposed to connect people together. But sometimes the effect is quite opposite. Personally, I think Facebook can either connect us to people or make us feel lonelier. It depends on how we will use it. In lines 2-3, the poet says "Welcome to the endless high-school reunion. Welcome to past friends and lovers..” On Facebook we become friends with people we lost in touch with like past friends or past lovers. Through social media, we are given another chance to reconnect with them. But in other ways, Facebook can also make us feel lonely. It gives us the illusion that we have these many friends. In the book “There Are No Children Here” by Alex Kotlowitz, the author followed the lives of two young brothers (Lafayette and Pharoah) while they grew up in the harsh streets of Chicago in the late 1980’s. The author uses the story of the two boys’ lives to discuss the social divide in our very own society and to persuade readers that there is a major problem in “the projects” of the United States.

Wright is an article that focuses on the idea of promoting English Language Learners (ELL) oral-language skills in the classroom instruction time to improve their literacy and academic achievement. Too often are an ELL’s speaking and listening skills overlooked and not given enough attention to, even though it is one of the most important parts of communication. Wright encourages teachers working with ELL students to allow time for the student to adjust, not to pressure them into their language development, respect their various stages, bring them into whole class and small group discussions, correct simple language errors in speaking that impeded comprehension, and have them interact and communicate in the classroom for meaningful purposes.

By writing a letter to his younger self, Terrance created a motivational and melancholic tone. The style of writing is, therefore, informal with a poetic touch to it. The article is written to motivate readers which results in it to have a motivational and melancholic tone. “Those moments of fear, inadequacy, and vulnerability that you have been running from, are the moments that will shape you.”.
The essay by technology reporter for the New York Times, Jenna Wortham, titled, “It’s Not about You, Facebook. It’s about Us” discusses the idea that Facebook has helped shape emotions and now leaves its users emotionless. Although Wortham brings in several sources she does not support these sources with statistics and her personal feelings stand in the way of getting her main points across. In addition, she has a weak conclusion that leaves readers trying to grasp the actual message that Wortham is attempting to convey. Wortham fails to effectively support her thesis that society feels that it can not live without facebook.

The book Unwind by Neal Shusterman is about the concept of unwinding an human being. Unwinding is the concept or process in which a child or teen’s organs and other parts of the body are taken out. These organs and body parts are then used to save other people’s lives. For example if a person doesn't have an arm then they could get an arm from an unwind. If someone is missing an organ then they could get one from an unwind. Many people may say or think if you unwind a person you are killing the person. However the government of this society says that they are still alive but just in a different way.
The book “A Long Way From Chicago” is an adventurous and funny story. The story takes place at Joey Dowdel’s Grandmothers farm house in the country. Joey and his sister Mary Alice were sent to their Grandma’s house during the summer because their parents had to go to Canada for their work. At first, Joey felt uncomfortable with his Grandmother because he had never met her before but eventually he got to know her and they became close friends.
There are many policy issues that affect families in today’s society. Hunger is a hidden epidemic and one major issue that American’s still face. It is hard to believe that in this vast, ever growing country, families are still starving. As stated in the book Growing Up Empty, hunger is running wild through urban, rural, and even suburban communities. Alexander Stowe is a twin, his brother is Aaron Stowe. Alex is an Unwanted, Aaron is a Wanted, and their parents are Necessaries. Alex is creative in a world where you can’t even see the entire sky, and military is the dream job for everyone and anyone. He should have been eliminated, just like all the unwanteds should have been. He instead comes upon Artimè, where he trains as a magical warrior- after a while. When he was still in basic training, and his friends were not, he got upset, he wants to be the leader, the one everyone looks up to.
In the essay “Everything Now” Signs of Life in the USA: Readings on Popular Culture for Writers, author Steve McKevitt blames our unhappiness on having everything we need and want, given to us now. While his writing is compelling, he changes his main point as his conclusion doesn’t match his introduction. He uses “want versus need” (145) as a main point, but doesn’t agree what needs or wants are, and uses a psychological theory that is criticized for being simplistic and incomplete. McKevitt’s use of humor later in the essay doesn’t fit with the subject of the article and comes across almost satirical. Ultimately, this essay is ineffective because the author’s main point is inconsistent and poorly conveyed.
The novel, Alone Together: Why We Expect More From Technology and Less From Each Other (2011) written by Sherry Turkle, presents many controversial views, and demonstrating numerous examples of how technology is replacing complex pieces and relationships in our life. The book is slightly divided into two parts with the first focused on social robots and their relationships with people. The second half is much different, focusing on the online world and it’s presence in society. Overall, Turkle makes many personally agreeable and disagreeable points in the book that bring it together as a whole.
Alexie’s use of words and tone throughout the poem shows his feelings toward Facebook in a negative way. First, Alexie grabs the readers’ attention by opening the poem up with the word “welcome.” His sarcastic tone is already being shown in the beginning of lines 1-3, “Welcome to the endless high-school/ Reunion. Welcome to past friends/ And lovers, however kind or cruel.” His opinion toward Facebook friends is that most users don’t consider the majority of their friends on Facebook their actual friend in reality. On Facebook or any other social media website, users may have hundreds of people they consider as their friends. However, in real life, most of the time that number lies in the single digit.
Others may not agree with my argument, that we are all able to connect with others so deeply, but I interpret this poem, that it is meant to show what deep connection that some may experience with others. Perhaps, individuals can go through out life never having such a connection with another. I hope that most are able to find someone that they love, and cherish. There is nothing better in this world then to have someone that you can always rely on to be there no matter the circumstances.
