In the essay We Would Not Have Come Without You, Hirsch and Spitzer narrate the history about Marianne’s parents during the period of the Great War. The history of the couple is presented to the reader as a compilation of quotes from the couple and comments from the author. However, after some paragraphs, one can realize that the primary theme of the passage is not the history of the couple itself, but the way the history is being told. The author swift the focus and start analyzing the feeling of nostalgia felt by not only her parents but also by Hirsch herself. From this point of the essay, comparing the types of nostalgia and relating the feeling to who actually experienced the moment becomes the central subject.
