Analysis of Cormac Mcarthy's The Road

I have conflicting thought regarding Cormac McCarthy's novel The Road. My initial thoughts of the novel were that it was solely built on the complete devastation of two characters lives and the surrounding landscape and their constant search for survival. However after giving it further insight I discovered the underlying messages of the importance of good and bad people in my life, the beauty of the little things in life and constant greed showed by desperate individuals. I believe the novels successes comes from the messages of the significant value of human life and the importance of memories in our lives.

I perceive the value of human life as invaluable. Your text enables me to envision how life would be without the comfort and security of civilization. The man’s views on life are judged by his experiences and his sole objective is to keep him and the boy alive. The father repeatedly promises himself and the boy that he would do anything for him. “My job is to take care of you. I was appointed to do that by God. I will kill anyone who touches you.” (pg 80).The boy returns the act of concern that the man has for him. The boy puts a large emphasis on that the man also must eat and drink ‘you to’. His compassion and willingness to help others in need brings conflict between him and his father. “Cant we help him? Papa? No. We cant help him.” (pg 51) The difference of the father’s practicability and the boy’s compassion is predominant. The text reinforces the idea that all life is sacred and important.

The value of human life is confronted by the theme of suicide. The man carries a pistol with two bullets, not for defense but to end their lives if they are captured. The man considers suicide as an option for escape, as the vol...

This day to shape the days upon.” This shows the simplicity of the man’s life and how something as simple as this memory can stay vivid and detailed in his memory. "… he knelt and smoothed her hair as she slept and he said if he were God he would have made the world just so and no different." (pg 27). Many years after his wife committing suicide he would start to wonder what life would be like if she was around. For me this applies, as sometimes I question how life would be different for me if my parents had never broken up. The man would find it hard to confront his feelings about his wife as I find it hard to confront thinking about my parents. For us to think about our family it hurts but we still do it. I believe this is an important issue you have brought to the reader as it has made me think about things in my life.

    This essay was depressing, but also impressive. There are two characters, and as I mentioned, one is the sympathetic one and the other is the empathetic one. In the essay, It Will Look Like a Sunset by Kelly Sundberg, she takes the disturbing moments of her life, gets a handle on them, and puts them together to create a sense of literature with language and style. She was married, and it was once a love story, like most. But, she then explains why she stayed and endured years of emotional and physical abuse from her husband, Caleb. The first paragraph of the essay starts off beautifully. It says, “I was twenty-six, having spent most of my twenties delaying adulthood, and he was twenty-four and enjoyed reputation as a partier. The pregnancy was a surprise, and we married months later.” (Sundberg, 208) And following that later on, “We didn’t want a church wedding, but our families insisted. Faith was what made marriage sacred. Faith was what kept people together.” (Sundberg, 209) The author creates a connection between her life, faith, and marriage. Expressing that having confidence in her marriage and having trust kept them together. Her pregnancy was a surprise and that also kept them together. Faith is the connection between God and herself. Sundberg mentioned that her and her husband were together two years before he started to abuse her. With him first pushing her against the wall, then two years later, he hit her. Following a year later, he hit her again. Her argument was that her husband wanted to change, so he attended therapy and anger management. Nonetheless, that did not help

During an interview with Oprah, McCarthy answered questions about The Road that he had never been asked before because pervious to the interview he had never been interviewed. Oprah asked what inspired the heart breaking book; it turns out that McCarthy wrote the book after taking a vacation with his son John. While on the vacation he imagined the world fifty years later and seen fire in the distant hills. After the book was finished, McCarthy dedicated it to his son, John. Throughout the book McCarthy included things that he knows he and his son would do and conversations that he thinks they may have had. (Cormac). Some question if the book is worth reading for college course writing classes because of the amount of common writing “rule breaks”. After reading and doing assignments to go along with The Road, I strongly believe that the novel should be required for more college courses such as Writing and Rhetoric II. McCarthy wrote the book in a way to force readers to get out of their comfort zones; the book has a great storyline; so doing the assignments are fairly easy, and embedded in the book are several brilliant survival tactics.

Cormac McCarthy was born July 20, 1933 and is one of the most influencing writers of this era. McCarthy was once so poor he could not even afford toothpaste. Placed in a world of poverty the story is about a man and his son. They travel to a warmer place in hopes of finding something more than the scattered decomposing bodies and ashes. Known as a common hate crime, the murderer obviously thought he was more superior to keep his life and to take someone’s life. Believing ideas in a possible accepting world with no conditions is dangerous thought to that person’s immunity to the facts of reality.
