Think of this, a world of followers, no direction, no guidance, no inspiration, and no motivation.A world filled with confusion, savagery, unorganized, simply put, pure chaos. The followers do as they please, do what is or isn’t right. These followers are lost, since birth to death, they just wander the Earth’s land, with no regrets. This world is the world without leadership, a world of pure followers. Leadership is critical to survival, not just in the military, but in all walks of life. Leadership is the factor to victory, by looking at historical leaders on how they influenced their environment, as well as looking at the traits of a leader, and the philosophy of leadership.

Leadership has many characteristics, but as well as personal who use this ability for both good and evil. In a book called The Warrior Ethos by Steven Pressfield, he speaks about Alexander the Great and his many characteristics of his leadership. As described in Pressfield, Alexander was in a waterless desert with his men. A couple of scouts go to Alexander, with the helmet of water as a gift. Alexander thanks them and dumps the water in front of all his men. The men cheer, with a king, likes this to lead us, no force on earth can stand against us”.On another event, Alexander also began to give away all his belongs to his men (42-43 Pressfield). This leadership characteristic is of generosity and caring for the team. Alexander chooses to suffer from his fellow men than to have the satisfaction of drinking water. He also gave up his valuables to show his men, that he cares for them more than himself. Another act of his kindness to his followers, was Alexander helped a veteran by giving him warmth and food (44-45 Pressfield). This is true leadership, being a leader isn’t going off and telling the followers what to do. It is to guide them, care for them, and inspire them to become great or even greater than the leader themselves. The goal is to become a leader, not a boss, to lead, and not to enforce.
