Since Sam Walton has been quoted saying, “I pay low wages. I can take advantage of that. We 're going to be successful, but the basis is a very low-wage, low-benefit model of employment.” To this day, Sam Walton’s vision for being successful by mistreating employees still continues. In 1970, Sam Walton hired professional union busters to resist the unionization effort of Retail Clerks International Union in Missouri. Walmart is still adamantly opposed to any form of union representation in their stores, going so far as to close down stores that attempt to unionize. The average wage of all U.S. cashiers was $11.22 an hour, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey. “Last week Wal-Mart surprised reporters by announcing a pay hike for its most poorly paid workers. The company declared it will raise its minimum base wage to $9.00 an hour starting in April and will boost the minimum hourly pay of all its current employees to no less than $10.00 an hour in February 2016.” While this is great news for Walmart employees affected by the pay raise, it is still only approximately a 15% pay raise. "We know from our experience and international relations that even in the U.S. workers are not allowed to join unions within Walmart," says Mike Abrahams, a spokesperson for South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union. "We know from our experience internationally that where they have moved, they systematically eroded workers’ rights and things like that. We don 't want them here." He added that unions are opposed to the merger. Unfortunately for the unions, in 2011 Walmart did purchase the majority stake in Massmart Holdings Limited, the leading African retailer of general merchandise, home improvement equipment, and supplies.
