Time to Reflect … 1.) What have you learned about yourself? Provide evidence to support. I learned that I am a visual learner and tactile learner (both have the same total) and that true, I like to work with my hands then actually type or write an essay, as I get instruction for a project, I like the teacher to explain on the board then talking and talking in class, I like taking notes to understand. I understand more if I highlight or underline important fact, that is why my work is all kinds of colour. 2.) What surprised you the most? What surprised you the least? Provided evidence. What surprised me the most is that I am math smart. I like math I enjoy problem solving, slopes, collecting data and making graphs, algebra etc.
A big component of my learning style is hands-on experience; learning while doing. This usually involved someone with more experience instructing me as I performed the task. Through the hands-on approach, I picked-up the knowledge and gained proficiency as I went along. My learning style also involved standard classroom instruction, which usually meant listening to lectures and taking notes. My note taking was not the best so in order to make up for what I lacked in note taking, I would read the textbooks repeatedly until I understood what I was reading. I learned that in order for me to get a complete understanding from my readings and notes, there had to be a lot great deal of repetition ...
I am a very hand on type of learner. I understand and remember much easier if I physically do it. I am one to never sit still for too long. I am a visual person I can remember things more if I see it over and over again. When taking a test I try to close my eyes and visualize what part of the book I saw that question and what was going on at the time to help. When I study or do my work I have to work for a little bit then get up and walk around do something else then refocused on my work. I am a person that touches it and can turn it this way or that, take it apart and put it back together I understand and learn it more. According to the textbook, “learning styles refer to the ways in which and conditions under which learners most efficiently and most effectively perceive, process, store , and recall what they are attempting to learn” (p.122). People have different learning style depending on how each person learn best based on interest and situation they are under. I am personally more visual and sensory in practical world than the theoretical matter. However, I can manage to learn both ways depending on what kind of information I am gaining and how it is presented to me. I have to be ready to learn and should be somehow interested on the information I am about to receive or in the process of receiving. It is beneficial to know that I am a visual learner due to the fact I have to visually see things for myself to understand and learn it. Growing up I have always been a visual learner. I found this inventory to be correct because of they way that I am , and how I take things in. When trying an auditory learning method, one big problem I struggle with is being able to pay attention long enough. By obtaining the confirmation on my preferred learning method, I can broaden my learning method by practicing the other learning methods outside of visual learning. I believe that I can open my learning styles by tring the other methods. If a person was to ask the average student what their learning style was, they would likely ponder because most students would not know what their learning style is. This is the case for Jeremy, a college student who discovered that the learning styles were broken down into three categories: Auditory, Visual, and Tactile. According to Educationplannner.org (2011), an auditory learner retains knowledge more efficiently by listening, Visual is learning through reading and writing, and tactile is learning by physical touching. Through a learning styles assessment from Educatoinplanner.edu (2011), Jeremy found that he is: twenty percent tactile, thirty-five percent auditory, and forty-five percent visual. People use their senses to well coordinate their learning skills such as listening and watching. The way you can take in information can come in the following learning styles, visual kinesthetic and auditory. A visual learner is someone who can best take in information by the use of photographs and charts. Kinesthetic learners also referred to as tactile learners enjoy learning new things, doing activities, but struggle to maintain themselves still. An auditory learner is easily distracted and struggles to follow written instructions. They improve in holding and maintaining information as they are listening. I spend so much time in my day learning new things. I spend about 35 academic hours learning in a week to be exact. The learning style I am categorized according to VARK is the Kinesthetic learning style. In this particular learning style in order to internalize information one has to use all their senses like the sense of sight, touch and feeling, taste by the taste buds, smell and hearing. The Kinesthetic learners even like to work in the laboratories doing experiments, like field trips love tours and prefer receiving examples of different kinds including principles of laws and like real –life examples. These learners believe in applications and like hands on experiences and approaches to learn new concepts and information. They also enjoy the trial and error methods to come to conclusions and also like collection of rock types, plants, shells, flowers, grasses and other interesting things in the nature. They are also interested in exhibitions of different kinds, samples of products and photographs of information to be learned. Kinesthetic learners also use recipes, find solutions to problems and like to refer to previous exam papers. They have a good memory to remember real life experiences and real things that happened. They also learn from talking about their notes with another kinesthetic person by using pictures, photographs and illustrate their ideas. They recollect experiments and field trips and the outcome of all these learning experiences enable them to perform well in tests, assignments and also in examinations.
The Visual Learners, they will highlight important information in textbooks, pictures, and good at charts, graphs, or small sections of printed information. For example, my best friend Helen Ng needs to highlight the main point in different colors, and study it one by one, she said this kind of methods can let her keep in focus.
Just as we are unique in our personality and characteristics, I believe that we also have a unique mixture of every learning type. No two people learn the exact same way and that’s what I find beautiful about learning. If we are labeled as just kinesthetic or just aural, we are limiting ourselves and our learning potential. While I struggle with reading a textbook, I love to read novels for enjoyment and learn from them. While I am not primarily a visual or aural learner, viewing a painting and listening to music are important ways to expand my knowledge. It makes more sense to look at and adapt our learning to each situation we encounter and use different learning techniques to assess situations. I find it vital that we fully understand each and every learning type not only to better understand ourselves and to grow in the areas we may be weaker in, but also to better understand our peers and the people we will encounter throughout our
I have a few different strategies I use to take full advantage of each of my learning patterns. When it comes to reading and studying I tend to get distracted very easily by things such as, the TV, my phone, my daughter, Facebook, etc. To keep myself from being distracted I do my schoolwork when my dad is sleeping in his room during the day and I have my mom keep an eye on my daughter that way it minimizes the amount of distractions I have to deal with. I also like to set aside a specific time during the day to sit down and read the chapter. I have to set aside time otherwise I find myself just skimming over it and then not doing very well on the quizzes because I didn’t take the time to deeply read it and really absorb the information. When it comes to my writing I like to bounce ideas off of my mom and sister just to see what they think about it. I do the same thing when writing an essay or journal. I like to read it out loud and have someone else read it so I can get some honest feedback about my paper and if they saw any grammar mistakes I may have
From the time I was a young child, I have always known I was different from others. Although I didn't realize I was in any way "smart" until around the fourth grade, I had been skipped up to the first grade from kindergarten. While friends struggled with homework assignments, finishing them came easily to me, like riding a bike. Supposedly - I've never ridden a bike.

This has always been the way that I work, being very active and hands on when learning, I figit and get distracted easily.
