This is an artwork of Vincent van Gogh, titled “The Starry Night”. It was finished in 1889 and its medium is oil painting on canvas. It is in post-impressionism style. It shows the night, far view of a village and it shows it is a country side. The village is surrounded by mountains. The tree and the roof of the church are sharp and break through the sky. The night sky makes use of contrast colour in yellow–blue tone comparison. It leads audience follows the lines and sharp points of the dead tree at the front and the church in the town. Then, the sight will follow the swirls and stars of the night sky. And audience will finally focuses on the bright moon at the top corner. The sky seems moving while the town is in silence. However, the sky is smooth and the land is rougher in the reality. The darkness of the tree does not belong to either the tone of the sky or the village. It is much closer than the other objects and alone, like the moon. They are both at one of the corner and their colour and shapes are in contrast. But the moon still has stars, which share similarity, as companions while the wood does not. The light of sky covers the whole village and mountains, except the tree. The colour and shape of the tree reveals it is hard to get along with others and it is irritative. The appearance of the tree shows it is corrupted and dying. It is at the top of the view and its height is nearly breaks the sky into two parts. This shows it deals with a lot of difficulties and be able to climb to the highest in order to get the most nutrients. Nevertheless, it is abandoned and no one understands its hard work and talent.
