After releasing Deadstone, one of the most enjoyable top down shooters of 2014, Timeslip Softworks is back with a Kickstarter for their latest title, Vigilantes. This time they have turned their attention to the turn-based strategy genre and have set their sights quite high. Vigilantes is influenced by genre classics from the 90s, such as Jagged Alliance, X-Com and Fallout, but breaks out of the mold with a unique theme and setting.
Vigilantes invites players to step into the boots of Sam Contino, a man who witness a violent mugging while wandering the mean streets of Reiker. Unable to turn a blind eye, Sam takes the law into his own hands by confronting the thugs, an act which sets him on a path to vigilantism. Reiker is a city that is overrun by paramilitary survivalists, the mafia and a religious cult calling themselves the Church of the Final Exodus, so there is no shortage of skulls for Sam to crack. Although still in Alpha, the demo contains a number of preset missions from the final game that serve as a good demonstration of what players can expect. With its crime theme and neo noir setting Vigilantes already stands out from the crowd and the preset missions quickly sucked us in. There is a lot we like about Vigilantes, from the slick looking choreographed melee combat to the way that dialogue choices can give you an advantage before even beginning a battle. Although combat plays a big role in the game we are glad to see that Timeslip Softworks haven’t lost their fondness for a good story either. The demo is available for free and can be tried out by anybody, so we’ll save our thoughts on the visuals and audio for the full review, but suffice to say the game looks like it is shaping up

What if you knew someone who was so close to you, you would do whatever it took to find those responsible for the pain they caused and punish them in the name of justice. Would you walk down the path of a vigilante and help bring about an end to their tyranny? Vigilantism can be looked at as crime if you look at it in a negative way, or it can be looked at in a positive way. Many vigilantes help make the world a better place every day by doing away with the evil people in this world who kidnap, rape, murder, and loot people in the streets. Vigilantism is justified because the vigilantes help make the world a better place and help bring to justice the ones that the law cannot catch.
For decades researchers have speculated about the relationship between levels of violence, and societal conditions such as poverty, urbanism, population composition, and family disruption. National and international level research has concluded that each of these factors are related to crime rates and their trends overtime (Avison & Loring, 1986; Lafree, 1999, Lauristen & Carbone-Lopez, 2011). To examine these factors more closely we should recognize that they are the foundation of many criminological theories, both motivational and control, applied to the macro and individual level. Specifically, these include social disorganization theory (Shaw & MCkay, 1942), anomie-strain theory (Merton, 1968), violent subcultural theories (Anderson, 1999), social bond theory (Hirschi, 1969), self-control theory (Gottfredson & Hirschi, 1990), and biosocial perspectives (Gottfredson & Hirschi, 1983).

In its own way criminology is the history of humanity. As long as people have been on earth there has been criminal activity. Much like most other work atmospheres, it was a male dominated field. A woman seeking to work in criminology was unheard of. Men filled the jobs as police officers, lawyers, judges, and politicians. However, in the 1860s Belva Lockwood became determined to pave the way for women in criminology. As a women’s rights activist, she became one of the most influential women in criminology.

Television series such as CSI, NCIS, Law and Order, Criminal Minds and countless others, have become very popular in our society today showing that our culture has an immense interest in crime.
