Most kids play role playing games that have simulated violence. But role playing games with simulated violence have been shown to be bad for kids and their development. In some aspects the violent games can make them more aggressive. In addition there is a quote that states “playing games can and does stir hostile urges and mildly aggressive behavior in the short term’(kegans 2). Although there are no studies that show playing violent video games having the children do violent actions like rap or murder. In an article it states “yet it is not all clear whether, over longer periods, such a habit increase the likelihood that a person will commit a crime (kegans 3).” On the other side lots of people have done crimes and they were connected to be playing violent video games. “James holmes, the sandy hook shooter, adam lanza, They're all described as essentially being addicted to video games(kain,3).” Most simulated games with violence have effects and most kids can maintain what happens. …show more content…
One quote states “playing games can and does stir hostile urges and mildly aggressive behavior in the short term (kegans 2).” other studies show kids show a dose of violent games can have a negative effect on a kid. Children that play violent video games at such a young age will have a bad effect on them. “Not everybody who plays these games will become murderers, just as not everybody who smoke gets cancer” (Quittner, J). Every day people play with these games will have an effect on the way they look at things, they will begin to have aggressive thoughts, and they will begin to have a change in behavior. On average boys spend thirteen hours per week and girls spend five hours on video games. This amount of time a week will have a major effect of these children minds. “Violent video games effect people. They increase aggressive thoughts, angry feelings, and physical arousal symptoms.”(Rollins 1)
Before we can explore the claim that playing video games can be associated with violent acts, the emotions and mental patterns which lead to violent crime must be outlined first. Some very common violent crimes which will serve as good examples are armed robbery and murder. Generally speaking, when someone commits or plans to commit a robbery, it is out of necessity due to a person’s environment, or a lack of personal drive to work for their own possessions. During the act of the crime, the robber is generally just as terrified as, or even more terrified than, the victims. It’s these feelings that can cause a robber to...
Research has shown that immediately after playing a violent video game, kids can have aggressive thoughts, angry feelings and physiological effects such as increased heart rate and blood pressure. In addition, studies that survey large populations of kids on their game-playing habits and measure aggressive personality traits or self-reported aggressive acts — physical fights, arguments with teachers — often find an association between games and aggression.
In 1998, the US software industry sold $6.3 billion worth of video games (see Unknown). Not bad for an industry that didn't exist 25 years ago! Yet despite its continued growth, all is not well in the video game industry. School shootings in Littleton, Colorado; Pearl, Mississippi; Paducah, Kentucky; Conyers, Georgia and many other towns have shocked the nation (see Malcolm). Understandably, grieving parents and sympathetic citizens are searching for a cause for this "outbreak" of youth violence. It is natural to assume, "when children, the symbol of innocence, commit the severest of crimes, then something must be going wrong with society." (see Maker)
Video games are widely popular as a form of entertainment for young children and teenagers in the United States, and many of these games contain forms of violence. Because this causes exposure to such graphic images for many children, there has been a concern that these violent forms of entertainment affect these children. Numerous studies conducted by groups of psychologists have been directed on this particular issue, leading to evidence both for and against this claim. This is an issue which parents should acknowledge, as it greatly impacts their children. Therefore, parents must become aware of the issue of violence in video games and monitor their children’s access to such games because history as well as numerous studies and statistics to have shown that they have negative effects on children, causing desensitization due to the exposure to such intense images.
Video games, with violent content, do not cause violent behavior. However, in the case of an individual experiencing, violent, disruptive, and dangerous behaviors, video games may contribute to an outburst of violence.
Lately there have been increasing amounts of people that say that violent video games are causing a number violent actions. To some extent this is true, but there are also studies that say games help people release their aggression in an appropriate way. I would tend to agree with the later.
... methodologies and the intrusion of ideology and scientific dogma” (Ferguson 11). Violent Video Games do not cause increased violent tendencies in youth and adolescents due to the fact violent video games have been around for years and in those years violence caused by teens have actually been dropping rather than increasing. Also, violent video games have been shown through research that the negatives are highly outweighed by the positives. Also, with the introduction of interactive gaming there are a new range of possibilities for violent video games. Such as sending a message to children about healthy activities by getting them off of the couch. So hopefully in five years violent video games will have moved to full interactive gaming so that it looks more real-life, but more importantly that it will still be a form of media that helps to relive personal stress.
If children are not taught that there are consequences in real life that there are not in video games or television, they might want to duplicate the actions they are shown. “An eight year old Louisiana boy intentionally shot and killed his elderly caregiver after playing a violent videogame, authorities say” (Russel, 2013, p.1). Video games are violent, children play video games, therefore children are violent. It takes an authority to teach the child what is wrong and right. “Violent video games are an ideal environment in which to learn violence” (Eakes, 2014). Giving the child a certain time to play is also a problem caused by the parent. Kids play games with guns and explosions and this attracts their attention. Children now a days believe video games and electronics are their life. As Emmons (2013) noted “Julian turned everything into a pretend gun and started running around the house like a pint-size Han Solo taking down Storm Troopers” (p.1). Violent media caused Julian to make a pretend gun and shoot his targets. This type of media can influence him to want a real gun and shoot real people as I mentioned earlier with the eight year old Louisiana boy. Violent media has such a great impact on children that some people might not see. if they see a movie and the main character steals something, then the child would want to also get an item that they might not have. Children that do not have what others do

Violent video games affect your mental, physical, and social being. You become desensitized to violence; start acting aggressively, and you become and aggressive person with aggressive responses. These effects are directly tied to the amount of game play, so an effective way to stop or at least slow the development of aggressiveness is to cut back on the amount of time spent playing.
Carey explains about the violent effect that video games have on kids. The amount of time kids play video games and the resulting behavior problems in school and even in crime. Related problems in the future. Kids become addicted to playing these violent video games, which should be controlled by the parents. Games are rated by the amount of violence. In addition, it is the parent’s responability to monitor these situations. Carey says too much exposure can cause future health problems and violent outburst.
Have you ever wondered if violent video games can cause aggression in children? Thousands of children all over the world engage in violent video games for a large amount of time during their day. According to ProCon.org 60% of middle school boys and 40% of middle school girls who played at least one Mature-rated (M-rated) game hit or beat up someone, compared with 39% of boys and 14% of girls who did not play M-rated games. I will be using naturalistic and case study research methods to determine if violent video games cause aggression in children.
Video games first appeared in the early 1970's. It all started with a simple white ball bouncing back and fourth on the screen. In 1986, Nintendo introduced its first line of home video game consoles. With the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) on the market, the home video gaming industry surged and immediately became popular among children. Since then, not only have video games increased in popularity, but there have been vast improvements in graphics, game play, and forms of gaming. Today, video games have become the preferred choice of entertainment among children and teenagers. Research done in 1998 has shown that kids who own video games spend an average of 90 minutes a day playing them. Clearly the video gaming industry is a profitable one. With the increasing competition between gaming companies, the advancement of technology and content of games began to change. One of the most significant and concerning changes in gaming is graphics. With the improvements in graphics the content of the game became more and more detailed and realistic. Visually violent actions can now be displayed on the screen. Images of blood, flying body parts, and gore have been integrated into every aspect of today's video games. Violence has always been a common factor in many games, but with the improvements in graphics and capabilities of gaming consoles, a growing number of people are becoming concerned about the effects on our children and society.
