Two major kinds of flow barriers are the deliberate blocks and the subtler structural blocks. Deliberate blocks are barriers are usually created by government and organizations to control the amount of people or objects coming in. For example, the French borders have been toughened to prevent refugees from entering the country. Following its steps, Spain has taken legal issues to keep Romanians out while Greece built a fence to keep Turkish away. Apart from borders, people and objects must pass gates, guards, passport controls, custom agents, etc. The biggest exception are the countries within the European Union who have done the opposite: facilitate travel among those countries. As globalization keeps growing, more and more barriers will arise. Government blocks affects everyone. Those who travel into a certain country are restricted in a variety of ways, from things they bring to how long they stay. Immigration is a big part of globalization as immigrants bring their culture, language, and ideology with them. Travel, both tourists and vagabonds, affect the economy of the country of visit, as well as every single companies they spend money on whether it’s a local café or airline. Barriers on gender, race, and ethnicity affect globalization in the way that they only get part of the benefits globalization brings, if any. Globalization is an “interrelated transformation in economic, political, social, and cultural practices and processes toward increased global integration”. It has some benefits to it but, those benefits do not out way the disadvantages of globalization. One disadvantage of globalization is outsourcing. In the article by Callero Tim Dewey was laid off by United Airline because they found out that they could outsource his job and pay his counterpart less than him. This illustrates that today it is not enough to have the right education, or have a good work ethic if the company you are employed for finds a way to cut costs so that they save money they’ll do it. Pieterse states that “since culture is a battleground, hybridity is a matter of mapping no man’s land.” (Pieterse, 117) While this argument is sound in many ways, I do believe that “battleground” conveys far more violence than is involved in most cultural mixing. However, Pieterse tempers his argument somewhat as he continues, saying that “hybridity does not preclude struggle but yields a multifocus view on struggle and by showing multiple identity on both sides, transcends the ‘us versus them’ dualism that prevails in cultural and political arenas.” (Pieterse, 117) Through this explanation, Pieterse backs up his description of “no man’s land,” which I think is a very apt term for the new territories created by hybridization because the results of hybridization are completely unpredictable; no one can map out what may come of cultural mixing, recreating cultural boundaries and even erasing existing ones. Sometimes conflict can be avoided and sometimes it cannot, but I believe that with the eventual acceptance of hybridization and cultural mixing, Pieterse’s no-man’s land will eventually become a true global community.

Economic Globalization Taking public opinion into account, the development of economic globalization may be regarded as both positive and negative. Social programs, such as welfare, can provide an equivalent comparison to society’s beliefs. In my patriotic opinion, economic globalization will always produce both pros and cons within its structure, regardless of intent or outcome. That is to say, that development of any nature, especially on a global level, affects everyone, directly or indirectly.
