There are hundreds of known infectious diseases in the world. These infectious diseases range from rather mild and unthreatening to severe, life-threatening diseases that can leave the victim with long-term disabilities. Good news for the seven billion people on Earth, scientists developed vaccines to prevent and protect against these fatal diseases. The creation of modern day vaccines began in the 1700’s with the first vaccines saving countless lives from smallpox. Vaccines save lives; lives of those vaccinated and lives of those not able to be vaccinated. With the help of vaccines numerous diseases have been eradicated. Vaccine are extremely effective. In children vaccines are 90%-99% effective in preventing diseases(Text 1). With almost 100% effective rates there is no reason not to vaccinate. Opponents of vaccines argue the human body is more effective because it is has innate, natural body processes, to stop diseases. However, this is incorrect. A study conducted by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation concluded that “one child dies every 20 seconds from vaccine preventable diseases”(Text 2). The natural human disease defense is not strong enough to fend off fatal diseases. Vaccines are strong enough though. Since vaccines were introduced to the population some diseases have completely disappeared. Smallpox, a horrible and extremely fatal disease, has been completely eradicated because of vaccines(Text 2), and it now poses no threat to any person. Because of vaccines, future generations are safer. People are at a lower risk of contracting diseases than ever before. When vaccines are given to everyone, future parents will be able to “trust that some diseases of today will no longer be around to harm their children in the future”(Text 4).
