Receiving a degree has never been more critical to getting a job that provides a supporting wage than ever before. As the workforce continues to move forward and evolve many individuals without a postsecondary education will be left behind. Sound paying jobs of the future will require postsecondary credentials. Colleges play an important role in providing the required knowledge and skills needed to be successful in the job market. However, many students enrolling in college lack the academic skills necessary to complete college level courses. Gabriel (2008), reports that nearly half of enrolled students do not have the necessary skills in reading to be able to perform soundly in college and faculty affirm these students are not prepared. Students may be unprepared for a variety of reasons, such as poor school experiences, challenging family and work loads, or unaware of how college works. Factors which include, but are not limited to prior academic achievement, socioeconomic status, gender, age, ethnicity, commitment, and extenuating family issues. Many low income college students struggle due to poor high school academics, financial and emotional stress, and a lack of peer connections on college campuses. A large number of students now entering college require developmental education. According to Gabriel (2008), an estimated 6 out of 10 students must take a least one developmental course. This number is outstanding combined with the number of students who actually complete developmental course requirements and meet college readiness standards. Even with developmental education many students are still not college ready. The transition into the college environment itself can be a challenge for all students and the first step to helping developmental and unprepared students is to learn the students’
