Many students all over the United States of America have trouble transitioning from a high school to a college lifestyle. Whether it is classroom performance, personal adjustment, stress, health, etc. Students have a hard time moving away from home and starting a new chapter in their lives making the transition into adulthood and college life. A new student in college may also be introduced to time management and personal responsibilities. Adjusting to college life can be difficult for some students they may be overwhelmed with all the new aspects of life now that they don’t really have an adult figure watching over them at all times.
In today’s society it is important to receive a college education to join the workforce. However, the transition from high school to college can be a very intimidating experience for many students. To make the college transition less frightening, students can take several precautions while still in high school. These precautions include participating in extracurricular activities, taking challenging courses, as well as developing good time management skills. Participation in extracurricular activities is important in succeeding in a college environment because it helps students to explore their interests and talents.
Changing can be the biggest obstacle many student will have to face while attending a University. Students will have to learn how to be on their own, and on top of that learn around what people to associate them self with. However, Lubrano goes on to say that depending on cultural ethnicity will determine how the years at college will change a person. Parents have spent about 18 years to mold their children the way they want, but the moment they enter college it seems to deteriorate into pieces, because of all the new material the students are learning.
In our educational system today many students tend to drop out early due to the fact of lack of motivation or they can’t be in school anymore. Charles Murray, author of “Are Too Many People Going to College?” states the importance of the educational system in America. He has different viewpoints on whether certain people should attend college or not. The lack of interest in school and learning is playing a major effect on the student’s decisions to attend class. However, many students just attend college for a semester to prove to other people that they can survive college for a small amount of time.
Sadly, high school did not prepare students as well as a majority of them thought that it did. New college students are in need of some guidance and a push in the right direction; instead of a push in a direction that is not going to be needed. The freshman, and any other students that are struggling should be focusing on their mental health and organization from school and their life outside of school. Not being able to keep the two separate and organized could greatly affect a student’s mental health, and damage their school work. All Golden West College students should be required to take two semesters of learning how to do things that everyone should learn after they leave high school, such as: how to balance a checkbook, how to do taxes, what a mortgage is, and many more things that they will need to know in life.
If the students, themselves, do not want to pursue a career wholeheartedly, then they may begin to struggle. Meanwhile, there are cases where the student is unsure what they would like to major in altogether. Students may also struggle academically due to being irresponsible, making wrong decisions, or misplacing their priorities when it comes to balancing their social life with academics.
Throughout the world, students are encouraged to attend high school and continue their education. However, many students find it worthless and become uninspired. They blame the faculty, school policies, and fellow students, when they should be blaming themselves. Unchallenging course work is most likely a sign that the student isn’t taking a hard enough course. During my high school experience, students had the opportunity to take college courses through our high school.

However, stress can affect students’ ability to work and cause health related problems. Also, the proposed stress management techniques pointed out ways to cope and deal with stress by setting reasonable goals and stay away from aiming for perfection. By achieving reasonable goals, it can reduce college students’ stress and help students gradually aim for higher goals. Furthermore, utilizing the proposed stress management technique helps college students to be ready to face greater stress such as higher class level classes in the future and still able to manage it.
