Tyra Banks Show: A Film Review: Preconceived Notions About Race

Having interactions with different races and cultures is a big part of what makes someone a well-rounded and cultured individual. Experiences like these give people the ability to make their own conclusions about who people are, instead of relying on negative, perpetuated stereotypes. When the Tyra Banks show was still on air, I remember that one of her segments was in relation to negative stereotypes and perceptions when it comes to race, ethnicity and skin complexion. The segment was entitled Preconceived Notions About Race. In part of the segment, there were for women sitting on a stage. Tyra had the audience guess the ethnicity of the four women. For the first woman, the majority of the audience guessed that she was Mexican. The woman, Yolanis was actually Nicaraguan. Tyra asked her how it made her feel that people always got her ethnicity wrong. The woman was very angry about being labeled as a Mexican. She said that she thinks that everyone thinks that Mexicans are immigrants or have a lot of family members in one home. Tyra then proceeded to ask the woman a very profound question. Not only have I been a person that people have racially stereotyped, but I have stereotyped people myself before. In some cases, this might have been a religious group or an ethnicity of people which I did not know much about at the time. The thing that helped me to break my stereotypical ideals of certain kinds of people was through dialogue and actually interacting with those people. The Nicaraguan woman admitted that she actually felt the same way about Mexicans. Yolanis goes on to say that having lived around a lot of Mexicans, that she has found the stereotypes to be true. She says that whenever she goes into a store, Mexican me seem to look at her in a lustful way.
