1. Read Chapter 3 Ethnicity: p. 31-47. Familiarize yourself with the vocabulary for Chapter 3 and use these words in your discussion board and in your writing. What influences one to be racist or bigot? Family has the biggest influence on how race is perceived for some. Read stated, “children begin to develop attitudes About race between the ages of two and five, that not talking about race leaves them vulnerable to misinformation and stereotyping, and that children 's acceptance of differences among ethnic and racial groups is essential if we are to create a society with freedom and justice for all” (Readman, 2011, p.50). Race and ethnicity is used on many platforms blending its meaning and sometimes it 's definition. - If you 're at school or at a social event and someone makes an ethnic or a racial slur to you or just in general, what would you do? Do you say something; do you say nothing, would you laugh or would you just walk away? America is in an odd place right now. I want to give two situations where I have said something and an instance I have said nothing. Being an educator in a in a city with less than 35,000 people makes my world a small world. In many instances people recognize me as a teacher and a leader of our local union Association. Many students know me after their Elementary years and still recognize me and some just act like they don’t see me. I was in attendance at a local football game when students started and inappropriate chant in a public setting. I decided to speak up to one student I knew had a conscience. After a quick comment about respect and responsibility the student acted like a leader and told their friends to cut it out.
