Globalization refers to the process of integration across the world, arising from the interchange of worldviews, products, ideas, and other aspects of culture. Globalization affects all facets of life, including health and well-being. Traditionally, the health sector has been closed and nationally focused, but that’s beginning to change. Healthcare has become a social policy and a worldwide concern that is subject to globalization. By 2009, there were fifty-eight countries with some form of Universal Healthcare. The question is: Can the U.S learn anything from the rest of the world about how to run a health care system? Universal Healthcare is implemented among three different types of systems: Single Payer, Two-Tier and Insurance Mandate. Through the single-payer plan, the government provides insurance for all residents (or citizens) and pays all health care expenses except for copays and secondary insurance. Providers can be public, private or a combination of both. The two-tier system involves the government providing or mandating insurance coverage for all residents (or citizens), while allowing those who can afford a secondary insurance receive better quality and/or faster access. Insurance Mandate involves the government mandate that all citizens acquire health insurance, whether from private, public, or non-profit insurers (Ghanta). In the United States, starting in April 2014, all citizens have to obtain health insurance (insurance mandate) through the Affordable Care Act. The Affordable Care Act was enacted to provide affordable and quality health care for all Americans. The law was signed by President Obama on Mach 23, 2010 and was upheld in the Supreme Court on June 28, 2012. Approximately 44 million people in the United States had no source of health insurance (The Uninsured). Through the Affordable Care Act, millions of Americans will have access to health insurance. Today, most countries have some form of Universal Health Care. There are many pros and cons to Universal Health Care. I believe there are changes to be made in the Affordable Care Act. The law is very extensive and complex. Millions of Americans will gain access to health insurance, but the concern is will the quality of it suffice? This is an important issue to discuss, especially for young adults graduating college. And for elders, what’s going to happen to Social Security? The synopsis is Universal Health Care is a controversial topic for many nations.
