Commentary-Twelfth Night

“In the Name Of Love”

In the play Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare, emotions set the stage as we explore how the many forms of love, that are introduced into this romantic comedy. As we navigate through the play, we start to see the different examples of fondness, the characters of Twelfth Night, have for each other. Orsino and Viola (masked as Cesario) find themselves between infatuation and true love in the beginning. Friendship also plays into the plot as we discover Antonio to have an intense connection between Sabastian. Love plays the focal part for “Twelfth Night, as Shakespeare shows the characteristics of love. What does it mean to love? Watch as the spotlight takes center stage and the characters of “Twelfth Night” let themselves fall for the delusions and misconceptions all in the name of love.

Andrew feels that he must protect his buddy Sebastian while he travels to unknown country, “If you will not murder me for love, let me be your servant.” (2.1.26) “Friendship love” appears as Sebastian heads off to Illyria with Antonio right by his side.
In the midst of chaos, even unsuspecting Mavolio falls prey to “self-love” after all, he’s as much entitled to romance as anyone else. With his puritan beliefs, poor Mavolio believes the nasty trick Maria has played on him “The devil a puritan that he is/my revenge will find notable cause to work” (2.3.1-6).
Love comes in many shades as Shakespearian characters illustrate an excellent view into the world of love. So what does it mean to love? Although, love can be in different forms, the true meaning of “love” is “a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person”.
