Recently there was a school shooting at a high school in Florida, 17 were killed and many others were injured. This attack was carried out by a 19-year-old named Nikolas Cruz. Cruz was clearly mentally unstable and had his actions show for it. His family and friends all knew about his issues and so did schools, his fellow peers even made jokes about him shooting up the school way before the incident even occurred. Multiple tips had been received prior to the shooting and the FBI did not take action to stop this attack and warn the school. Florida Gov. Rick Scott called on the FBI to release “all details” on why they did not adequately follow up on the tip received in January about Nikolas Cruz. The FBI had received a tip stating Cruz’s desire to carry out a school shooting and did nothing to stop it. The caller provided information about “Cruz’s gun ownership, desire to kill people, erratic behavior, and disturbing social media posts, as well as the potential of him conducting a school shooting.” (Watkins) This tip should have been taken seriously because of previous tips and his personal background. The fact that he was expelled from the school and has had many incidents prior to the shooting should have raised red flags for the FBI. …show more content…
“The FBI reportedly received another tip as early as September from a YouTube user whose page was commented on by a user with the name nikolas cruz- the comment read: I’m going to he a professional school shooter.” (Scott) The FBI yet again failed to act upon the tip and deputy Rod Rosenstein will oversee an internal review of the protocols of both the Justice Department and the FBI. This internal review will help make both departments address future threats more effectively. Such tips must be acted upon to keep us all safe and to stop sick people from committing such horrific acts of

His father was a wealthy aristocrat, but the family fortune was promised to his older brother. Francisco was determined to make his own fortune in the New World. This is what made him an explorer.
Although the families of those affected and the American people watching at home believed in the security of our Nation during the Sandy Hook school shooting, we as a Nation have not put in the recognition needed to see the restraint that has blinded us from noticing we aren’t doing enough for the safety of our children when it comes to gun violence; therefore, President Barack Obama wants the American people to see this as it is and to begin to resolve this issue, beginning with gun control policies.
A team of FBI agents, psychiatrists, and psychologists reached a different conclusion than that of the media. A conclusion that was “both more reassuring and more troubling” (At last we know, Cullen). Cullen says in the same article, “We can’t understand why they did it until we understand what they were doing.” It was more than just a school
"In October 1997, a 16-year old in Pearl, Mississippi, first killed his mother and then went to school and shot nine students, two fatally; in December 1997 a 14-year old went to his school in West Paducah, Kentucky, killed three students and wounded five others; in March last year, two boys, aged eleven and thirteen, killed four girls and a teacher outside their school in Jonesboro, Arkansas; the next month a science teacher was shot dead, allegedly by a 14-year old, at a school dance in Edinsboro, Pennsylvania; last May in Fayetteville, Tennessee, an 18-year old student allegedly shot dead a classmate in the school car park; two days later, in Springfield, Oregon, a 15-year old opened fire at his high school, killing two teenagers and wounding more than twenty (police later found that his parents had been killed at home) ("Lesson"). On April 20th of this year, two teenagers enter their school and open fire, killing 12 students and one teacher before taking their own lives.
Public mass shootings have increased at an alarming rate over the past three decades and have become a growing concern for the people of the United States. It has appeared that approximately every few months, media outlets report incidences of tragedy involving a sole gunman targeting groups of people with the intent to harm or extinguish life due to various motives. Recent research data indicated that over 80 public mass shootings have occurred in the United States since 1983. Some of the more recent shootings to date are: Marysville-Pilchick High in October 2014; Santa Barbara, California in May 2014; Fort Hood, Texas U.S. Army base in April 2014; Washington Navy Yard in September 2013; Sandy Hook Elementary, Connecticut in December 2012;
There are lenient gun regulations in Texas and it is easy to obtain a gun license and purchase guns. The Alcohol, Tobacco and Fire Arms agency came to serve David Koresh a search and arrest warrant (Newport,2006). They were serving this warrant because of alleged illegal weapon at Mount Carmel. There was an extensive investigation into these illegal weapons and they thought David and the residents of Mount Carmel were trying to convert guns into fully automatic weapons (Newport,2006). The raids started on February 28 of the same year and lasted until April 19 1993 (Newport,2006). On February 28 1993 the first raid was supposed to be peaceful and no one was supposed to get hurt. The ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco and Fire Arms agency) showed up to Mount Carmel with 75 agents in full gear ready for the raid (Newport,2006). The raid did not go as planned. A gun battle resulted in casualties on both ends. The FBI was now involved and the public was becoming aware of the events happening at Mount Carmel (Newport,2006). The FBI and Police were too involved now to back out. They felt the need to finish what they started at all costs. The February 28th raids were only the beginning of the horror that the Branch Dividians would face. On April 19, 1993 the worst and final raid took place. During the raid on April 19 1993 David Koresh, 68 adults and 21 children were all inside and all but nine died in the fire (Newport,2006). It is still unsure how the fire was started and there is no evidence that shows it was the police. The police only had a warrant for David Koresh. The raids ended up effecting a lot more people than just David. Many children died in the raids, the children were not the “bad guys” but the police and FBI still went forward with the raid. This whole situation could have been handled a lot better and the loss of lives would have not happened if the police and FBI acted in a different
Harris and Klebold, armed with guns and bombs, grotesquely mobilized what little power they thought they had. Perhaps at another time or in another place these murders would not have occurred. But right now, the issue is power. That is our final lesson. One Georgia school board member -- obviously aware of the issue -- said following the Conyers, GA shooting: "We've got to let these kids know who's in charge of the schools" (New York Times, May 24, 1999).
In December 2014 an elementary school was attacked by an armed gunman. The shooter’s name was Adam Lanza. He killed twenty first graders an...
It is a sad time in American history when one can easily recount recent school shootings in their own area. This ease stems from a sharp increase in the number of firearms brought into elementary and middle schools across the country, with an intense focus on the issue beginning after the shooting of 20 children from Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut. Most school shooters are male, white, and often upper middle class. They are also more, often than not, under some type of mental stress that is causing them to create this type of violence in our communities. In fact, many school shooters are never suspected of doing any harm to their peers and teachers until it is much too late.
There have been many cases of school shootings in the past decade and we need to put a stop to it. Innocent lives are being taken away, students aren’t feeling safe or the desire to learn and school isn’t like it once was. Last year there was a school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary were many innocent children and teachers were killed. A teacher who worked at Sandy hook, Victoria Soto was shot and killed for hiding her students in a closet and told the gun they were in the gym just so the children can be safe and risked her life for them. In an article ‘She was a hero” by Erin Smith he explains that Soto was a hero and had saved her children and if she was armed she would ha...
Two students killed and thirteen others left wounded, six schoolmates shot by fellow classmate, 13 people dead and 23 wounded in a High School, Four girls and a teacher are shot to death and 10 people wounded during a false alarm in school…Those were the headlines of all newspapers at one time or another. High School shootings have been occurring throughout the United States. Why is it that a student would come into their school and open fire? Why is it that no one notices the signs before the incident? How is it possible that they were able to bring the firearm into the school? Those are some questions people need answers to, especially those concerned with what will happen next.
And yet once again, we hear the FBI insist there is no "profile" of a school shooter. Come again? White boy after white boy after white boy, with very few exceptions to that rule (and none in the mass shooting category), decides to use their classmates for target practice, and yet there is no profile? Imagine if all these killers had been black: would we still hesitate to put a racial face on the perpetrators? Doubtful. Indeed, if any black child in America -- especially in the mostly white suburbs of Littleton, or Santee -- were to openly discuss their plans to murder fellow students, as happened both at Columbine and now Santana High, you can bet your ass that somebody would have turned them in, and the cops would have beat a path to their doorstep.
When we recall of school shootings, we usually think of recent events, like the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, or the shooting that occurred at Lone Star (North Harris) January 22, 2013. However, school shootings didn’t just start in this decade; it’s been happening over the past couple of years such as the University of Texas Tower Shooting the second deadliest shooting ever in the
Alcohol abuse, psychological abuse,and poverty are some factors that lead Luis Garavito Cubillos to be the world’s worst rapist and serial killer. Cubillos, also known as “the beast” needed to feel god like. He had the worst fantasies but the fantasies were better than real life. He would recreate the murders and soon about 172 young boys became victims of him.
