Toyota Corolla History
The Corolla is the first car Toyota manufactured in America, and 30 million Corollas have been sold in various countries. It is the most popular car ever produced by Toyota. The first Toyota was manufactured in Japan in 1966. The vehicle was introduced to the United States in 1968. Toyota worked hard to overcome the perception that Japanese vehicles were shoddy. The first Corolla sold for less than $2,000. The company proved they could make an inexpensive car without sacrificing quality.
Appearance Over Time
First generation Toyota Corolla's had a very basic design. The rear axle was mounted on a pair of leaf springs, and the vehicle had strut front. The second generation Corolla had the leaf spring rear suspension and front strut. The 1970 model was significantly more comfortable than the 1969 model. In 1970, the Corolla was the second most popular car in the world. The grille was redesigned in 1972. The aesthetic did not have any more major changes until 1975.

A three-door hatchback was introduced in 1976. The hatchback was supposed to be a sporty two-door station wagon. The Corolla Sport Coupe was introduced in 1976. The front-end styling was updated in 1977. In 1979, Toyota used a coil spring system in most Corollas. Air conditioning and a stereo were optional features throughout the 1980's. Back in the 1960's a new idea was soon to hit the American market, the Ford Mustang. When the Mustang was introduced, General Motors soon to had to follow with their own type of sports car. The car they generated was know as the Chevrolet Camaro. The cars themselves were introduced within the matter of a few years of one another. From the day that General Motors and Ford realized that these cars were very similar in horsepower, torque, standards, and etc... they soon started to pit them against each other in an all out battle that has still last to present day. However, the Chevrolet Camaro has always had the slight advantage over the Ford's Mustang.
The hatchback became a successful model produced. Also they introduced a new line of pick-ups, the Chevy Silverado in 1988. Chevy sold more trucks than cars in this decade for the first time in the US. Also introducing the Tahoe, Chevy had more SUV success. Redesigning to the Camaro, Impala, and the new Chevy S-10 pickup, Chevy's continued to symbolize American vehicles. Chevy brought out restyled models of previous cars in the early part of the new century. After a brief period of not being produced the Impala came back in 2000 along with the highly anticipated return of the Camaro in 2010. Also, due to the Recession in 2007, Chevrolet built the Hybrid Tahoe, to increase fuel efficiency in SUVs. After more than 100 years Chevrolet and Durant could not have dreamed of 214 million cars by their company. Chevrolet has experienced much change over the past century. It has achieved multiple accolades that commonly go unrecognized. Some of these include winning the most NHRA pro stock manufacturers cups. Also in racing, it has the most victories in NASCAR along with the most championships. In NASCAR it has 738 victories and has won 38 of the 57 championships. Toyota is basically into cars and it is one of the top players in the world in this industry. Toyota also owns two other brands namely Lexus and Scion, which gives the company a lot of advantage over it’s other competitors. Toyota manufactures sedans, saloons, suvs, muvs, pick-up trucks and buses. During the year 2013 Toyota had approximately 333,498 employees, who were working globally. In March 2013, Toyota was ranked as the thirteenth biggest organization globally in terms of its revenue. As stated, the Toyota brand has and will continue to maintain a competitive advantage due to the quality of their product. They are able to charge a premium price while still utilizing the differentiation strategy. Their customer service is even superior to others. Toyota’s uses both differentiation and low cost as generic strategies to try and gain a competitive advantage over their competitors in the automotive industry. The market scope that Toyota uses is a broad one that encompasses nearly every type of customer that is in the market to purchase an automobile. Toyota is able to target such a large market because they have something for everyone. Toyota has four wheel drive trucks and SUVs for the outdoor types or those who live in areas that face severe weather conditions, hybrid models like the Prius for the eco-friendly customers that are interested in saving the environment, along with the standard cars for general, everyday use. Porsche is always a want to consumers because they have the mind of concept that owning Porsche is meant for upper social class and it could bring them to a higher status as the value is high. Therefore, the Porsche 914 and 944 models were out in the market in 1970s and 1980s to attract consumers from different social classes who could not afford a traditional Porsche model. At that time, consumers bought the 914 and 944 models to satisfy their needs and wants because they wanted the image of the brand.
