The banning of tobacco ads has been prevalent in our society for years. It has been a constant argument between big tobacco companies and governments worldwide. While some may argue that it is the first step to ridding the tobacco products and the use of tobacco, others will argue that without these companies producing the media related to tobacco ads, jobs will be lost and the economy will take a loss in revenue. The ban on tobacco ads in India has been a constant struggle between those who agree with the ban and those who do not. Those who disagree with the banishment of tobacco products in India argue several points. Employment will actually increase due to consumers spending their money on other products and utilities. Money does not cease to exist once tobacco is no longer in the picture. However, it is spent elsewhere, thus creating other opportunities of employment. There is a conflict of interest however in India. The government has one main concern, the welfare of its citizens. But is the decision to ban tobacco ads a cross into people 's free will. Shouldn’t the people of India be allowed the natural right to choose? They have a duty to its citizens, but they also have a duty to uphold their rights. India also has to keep in mind that without the advertising industry millions of jobs will be lost in the process. While the banishment of tobacco ads could potentially save lives, it could also cause great devastation to those that are currently established in the workplace. I believe that while governments have a duty and an obligation to its citizens, they do not have a right to take away that of free will. Cigarette smokers regardless of the advertisements are going to smoke. It’s as simple as that. While they may no longer be able to make an informed decision based on the quality of a product, they will still choose to smoke.
